Friday British Open Semi Live Blog

8:30 pm

5-1/2 hours until play resumes, assuming weather cooperates.  Looks like the rain will end shortly before resumption.  Winds will be about 21 mph, which is a little lighter than they will be later in the day.  I’m going to set my clock.

Oh, by the way, David Duval is close to making the cut.  If Duval makes the cut and Woods misses, oh, baby, that will make Duval’s Golf Channel appearances a lot of fun!!

6:50 pm  The Scroll

I honestly believe the constant scroll ESPN runs — and I don’t limit this to just this golf broadcast, but for all their programming — is an insult to the intelligence of every viewer.  It’s a constant distraction; even when you manage to ignore it, you are being distracted subliminally every time it moves.  It’s called the “orienting response,” and it’s not done by accident.

6:00 pm

  • It’s amusing how the golf media will obsess over Woods, refusing to back off until a tipping point is reached — Woods mathematically out of an event, basically — and suddenly he all but disappears from the telecast.  Like when he’s eleven shots back, he might still be a huge story.  Twelve back?  Oh, no, no.  Of course not.  That would be silly.
  • I feel compelled to get up and watch Jordan play his closing holes.  They are pretty critical.  Of course, I might get up only to find it is raining.
  • The Snedeker Report — Sneds beat two Euros, tied one, and lost to four.  I think Grace was T-3 at the U.S. Open and is a respectable T-25 here.  Lahiri made the cut at the Masters and here, and Sneds missed both of those (as I recall).  I think jalnichols needs to apologize for insulting Lahiri, Jaidee, Gallacher, Bjorn, Jimenez, Warren, and Grace.  The idea that these players aren’t fit to lift Snedeker’s jock is obviously a wrong-headed one.  Especially the younger one, who have the bulk of their careers ahead of them.  Sneds has a PGA Tour scalp this year, and every time these players are in the field with Sneds, they play competitively, making as many cuts as Sneds.  The idea that the Euro Tour is filled with guys not good enough for the Hooters Tour or whatever is ludicrous.
  • I miss Rory.  He’s a long-hitter (who would enjoy an advantage at St. Andrews) I enjoy rooting for.
  • Spieth’s par from the bunker on No. 13 (?) was sorely needed.  I was already adding a third “wasted” stroke to his tally this week.  There’s something about Spieth and how he is able to salvage a score on so many holes.
  • Matsuyami was insane today.  I noticed his caddie, Shindo, a couple of times today, and he looked like he was having a good time.  One of them was right after Hideki hit that big curving putt from off the green after Spieth hit a great putt just before and gave him a perfect read.

4:44 pm  Talk about the tail wagging the dog.  Watson could walk across the damned bridge without playing the hole.  He could walk it tomorrow.  They could have given him a late-early tee time.

3:05 pm  In the Seniors Division competition, Tiger Woods and Tom Watson lead at +6.  Nick Faldo is four back at +10.  Mark Calcavecchia is at +11.

3:00 pm These stupid sons of bitches needs to stop trying to be funny and focus on the tournament.  They just said, “DJ is teeing off.”  He hits.  “Jordan doesn’t like it.”  WTH?  It was Spieth teeing off.  When the players are all dressed in black and gray, we need identification of the players.  This is awful.  I don’t give two shits about some idiot I don’t know whose handicap is 1.5.  So freaking what.  I DO care about who is freaking teeing off!!!

I can’t take this.  These guys are getting huge checks for this grab-ass BS.

2:30 pm  “Good call, Andy.”  Indeed!

Now, Jordan, don’t you dare miss this putt, son!

2:00 pm  Bubba Watson is sitting right at the cut line, and has a game that suits St. Andrews.  Have they even shown him yet?  Have they even shown him?  I have not seen him.  I have not SEEN him.  I would not even know he is playing.  But, Woods, who needs to gain three or four strokes before he is even in cut line territory, is having his every shot shown.

Well, ESPN lost the British Open.  Only one more year after this one.

1:30 pm  To everyone who bitched about Fox’s coverage (which was actually fairly great), I hope you are watching this pathetic crap.  ESPN is covering nonsense players, blocking the hole with graphics, running a useless scroll.  Now, it’s 75 percent commercials to make up for the wasted time.  Matsuyama had the shortest birdie putt on No. 3, and they didn’t even show it.  Oh, that’s right, he’s Asian.  The racism against Asian in the golf media is sickening.  In fact, he’s freaking -3 after three holes!!!  ESPN is showing fracking Woods and Faldo!!!!!

1:20 pm  Can they not at least do split-screen?  This is infuriating.

1:15 pm  How can ESPN not cover the group with the leader and the man going for the Grand Slam in order to show Faldo and Woods?

1:05 pm  Looks like ESPN is planning to cover Nick Faldo nonstop until Tiger Woods tees off.  We can read about Spieth and DJ’s round in tomorrow morning’s newspaper, I guess.

12:48 am  It’s Go Time!!!  (finally…)

10:30 am Scoreboard Watching Russell Henley having a good round, -4 on the day through 13 holes, after a +2 yesterday.  Sir Nick is E after nine holes; far better than yesterdays +11.  One hour until Sneds; two hours until Jordan and DJ.

9:50 am  My internal clock is in synch with St. Andrews time, so the delay has thrown me off.  So, while I’m waiting for the later tee times, I’ll share a few thoughts about…

Things That Have Happened Since Tiger Woods Last Won a Major:

  • Joe the Plumber gained fame
  • Sarah Palin became a household name
  • President Obama was elected — twice (and won a Nobel peace prize)
  • Sully Sullenberger safely landed an airplane in the Hudson River
  • Michael Jackson died
  • Ted Kennedy died
  • The first Twilight movie was released (there are now five of them)
  • The first Fast and Furious movie was released (there are now seven of them)
  • Television programs Modern Family, Glee, and The Middle aired for the first time

All those things seem to me about a million years ago.  The golf media continues to treat Woods as the story before every golf major.

8:30 am  Mr Elling says Jordan and DJ unlikely to finish until tomorrow morning. (“Reign storm: Weather delay means Slam-seeking Spieth likely won’t finish today“)

I have said it many times before, but following Dan Jenkins and Steve Elling on Twitter is a pretty decent thing to do during majors.

Right now, all of the Euro Seven lead Brandt Snedeker, but, in fairness, he has yet to start today, and the early holes usually yield birdies.

American sports reporters like to make jokes about guys like Danny Willett, as if they just fell out of a tree.  If they followed the European Tour, though, they’d know his name is frequently near the top of leader boards.

Hey, I just noticed David Duval beat Woods by four yesterday.

5:30 am I woke up to find a weather delay.  Play has resumed.  The weather.com forecast for St. Andrews shows no more rain until the afternoon, and the worst hourly forecast then shows only 20 percent chance of rain.  The wind is said to be around 17 mph now, gradually increasing and peaking about 24 mph in the afternoon, before diminishing a little; I’m not sure about gusts.  We’ll have to wait and see, but it would appear the weather might not affect the outcome too much.  The afternoon was tougher yesterday, and it would appear to be tougher today, too.  Sunset there isn’t until nearly 10 pm, but with a four-hour delay, will the second-round be completed today?  DJ and Spieth tee off at 5:48 pm.  Sunset is 9:47 pm.  Do they have an extended twilight that far north?  From a short-term selfish standpoint, it sure is going to be a long wait until Spieth tees off.

Fowler tees off in an hour; maybe he can post something good and put himself in contention.  Six of the Euro Seven are on the course early, too.  Still, it seems like most of the players I’m interested in are on the late side of the draw.

ESPN just showed John Daly on the range, cigarette dangling from his lips.  All is right with the world.  (By the way, Daly said that yesterday afternoon was the toughest conditions he had ever played in at St. Andrews.)

The amount of commercial time is disgusting.

    • lannyh says:

I noticed that yesterday. It seemed to get better as the day wore on, but maybe I just got used to it.

      • Ken says:

        It may be improving already.

Always have enjoyed Peter Alliss. Love the dry wit. ABC used to have him on the coverage of some American tournaments. He’s sounding more gravelly now, but he is 84 and has been on air for many hours this week.

  2. Sports-realist2 says:

Ok, they want “BAD WEATHER” for the British Open, and particular St. Andrews….So what do they do when weather shows up—–DELAY??

  3. JoseyWales says:

Elling is a funny guy…funny how?…funny because he isn’t owned by Golf Digest, Golf Channel, ESPN, Callaway, etc…at least not yet. Most of these guys have an agenda not to piss off the people that are paying them. Elling is a free bird at least up till now. And Jenkins is funny because he really doesn’t give a f**k.

  4. Sports-realist2 says:

If you are Spieth and Johnson, they will probably get through 13-14 holes today, THEN get up really early to finish, THEN have to probably wait several hours to play again…..Their ‘body clocks’ will definitely be tested…..They will feel like they just got done working a midnight shift…..

    • lannyh says:

Yeah, and don’t forget about us golf fans We’ll have to get up in the wee hours to watch Jordan finish, then wait around until (hopefully) one of the last few groups.

On the bright side, all the naysayers who said Woods wouldn’t make the weekend will be eating crow!

      • Sports-realist2 says:

lol..yeah I was going to type that at least Eldrick will play on Saturday, but you beat me to that ‘sarcastic’ quip…..
Yeah, the hours will be brutal on you Lanny, but it could be your finest hour……You might just win the Arthur Ashe award for your efforts here, so don’t even think about quitting..

      • lannyh says:

I believe the most brutal part of all is translating the tee times.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

yeah, I’m glad I’m not the only one who finds the tee times a little confusing…

      • Bird says:

I let the pvr do the work. Sweet.

  5. Sports-realist2 says:

Lanny, you forgot the most important events:
    1. How many COMEBACKS we’ve had the pleasure and honor to see of Eldrick since 2008…7, 8, 9? I’ve lost count….Now, if you stub your toe, and miss a week, it was considered a comeback…
    2. How many ‘cameras following the cart to the car after a withdrawal’ have we seen…
    3. How many SPECIALISTS have the golf channel had on to discuss Eldrick’s possible ailments and injuries…..
    4. How many discussion SPECIALS and replays of Eldrick have they had?

  6. Sports-realist2 says:

Last night, there was a ‘wagering line’ on some golfers 2nd rounds…Ofcourse some of this might have been influenced by the weather report…..Had Phil o/v 72.5…..Eldrick o/v 75.5……..

  7. Sports-realist2 says:

So the US Open main characters were Jordan Spieth, DJ, and Louis…..Just seems like it’s going to be deja vu all over again….

  8. Ken says:

They didn’t show Faldo until 17. I don’t mind watching him finish. And we didn’t miss a Spieth shot.

Haven’t seen too much of Tom Watson. I thought they would show too much. Woods is off, so the coverage will now tank.

    • Sports-realist2 says:

Sometimes producers try TOO HARD, to make golf into the academy awards for some reason….I’m surprised they didn’t have background dancers and some guy singing some rap song, as Faldo finished…Knowing ESPN, they could have invited Bruce Jenner to hug Faldo after he finished, with some flowers…

      • Ken says:

Okay that intervew was rather long. I like Sir Nick though.

      • lannyh says:

I’m a fan, too, but they could do this stuff any time. Nantz will rehash it on CBS their next broadcast.

      • lannyh says:

Then, after Faldo, they “catch up” by showing Woods. Un-freaking-believable.

      • Ken says:

Nothing but Jordan, DJ, and Woods from here on. Until Watson reaches 18 anyway.

Great players all over the course. ESPN should meet a few of them.

      • lannyh says:

Woods, because both his playing partners are beating him by eight or ten strokes…

      • lannyh says:

We just got Faldo finishing, Woods starting, Faldo interview, then a truckload of commercials. Great job, ESPN!

Like, you know, 21-year-olds go for the Grand Slam every day.

      • Ken says:

It is funny though. Nick had turned from a player who talked to no one to a chatterbox.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

Yeah the later tee time, gives the illusion that Eldrick is in the tournament…. The recent rigged tee times for the first two rounds of these Majors, has gotten EXTREMELY old in a hurry…

      • lannyh says:

Think they’ll mention that his is T124?

      • Ken says:

I think the draw and tee times should be totally random.

It’s rigged, but unfortunately it’s the prerogative of the R&A and USGA to do whatever they want.

  9. DanishDude says:

Faldo actually birdied the Road Hole… quite impressive last hurrah

  10. Sports-realist2 says:

In windy conditions, Spieth should give up on that ‘looking up’ stuff at the hole….Why not look up for your iron and driver swings too? Oh, because it makes no sense..

    • Sports-realist2 says:

It’s early, but Spieth has hit ONE quality shot and didn’t take advantage of it through 4.5 holes….With DJ already making a bs putt, the DISTANCE factor could be becoming too much……

      • lannyh says:

Well, the bunkers only penalize people who hit it where Jordan hits it. They need to either roll back the ball or stop playing at this goat pasture.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

I’ve said many times…this course is obsolete with today’s hitters…Barring CRAZY weather, it’s just a ‘long drive’ competition for a major…Remember the US Open was fairly similar…The PGA needs TREES….These ‘field pastures’ majors is really just insulting to a good player who doesn’t kill it……

      • lannyh says:

Yeah, we already have long-drive contests for the distance players. Give us GOLF!

      • Sports-realist2 says:

if you are going to allow the same golf balls and equipment, then the PGA HAS to TRICK up these golf courses……More water, more DEEP bunkers, more trees to hurt the LONGER hitters…….

      • lannyh says:

And waste areas that run the entire length of the course.

  11. Sports-realist2 says:

Yeah exactly…I mean what did St Andrews update? How did they change it to challenge the longer hitter? I don’t see much difference from the last number of times they’ve played St Easy Andrews….A Major should FORCE you to hit a variety of shots…Driver, wedge, putter all day to me is a joke…….
The EASIEST way, like you said, would be to have WASTE AREAS grown up in ALOT more parts in the DEEPER fairways…..

    • Ken says:

Very little. The road bunker is deeper, which few players get near because they fear it so much. They removed some obsolete bunkers that no one hit into. Even those changes raised a ruckus. It’s like the Cubs changing Wrigley. So we get a dull, obsolete course.

I don’t enjoy playing a lot of older courses that are now just driver/wedge layouts. It’s boring. It’s not much more fun to watch.

Jordan will get dialed in. He’ll be fine.

      • Bird says:

Boy Jordan may fare better going onward without anymore Dusty or Hideki clinics. Or he may not.

  12. Ken says:

This sort of coverage is even more galling on days like today. The guys watching the first two rounds of a major are the hardcore fans. We want to see all the players. We definitely want the top players. Instead we get Woods. Why not show every shot by Lyle, Faldo, Watson, O’Meara? They have as much business getting TV tine as Woods. Heck, Lyle was -1 thru 27 holes.

    • Sports-realist2 says:

I was thinking, how would you like to be Woods…He won’t make the cut, but won’t finish the round either….So he will have to get up early to finish his pointless last few holes, only to miss the cut anyway……

      • Ken says:

Even he at some level must be embarrassed to be the focal point of coverage. I’m sure, like the rest of us, he’d rather not have his poor shots seen by anyone.

      • lannyh says:

Stephen A. Smith said Woods needs to tell the golf media, “Guys, go cover the other golfers, the ones who are playing way better than me. Right now I’m just not playing well enough for all this coverage.”

    • lannyh says:

Woods playing like crap, out of the running, and the cover him like he’s on 59 Watch.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

I’ve gotta believe that MOST of the fair weather Eldrick fans are NOT watching this…..

      • lannyh says:

Yeah, that’s what gets me. What Woods fan is going, “I won’t miss the British Open. Tiger is T132! He’s intimidating all those other meaningless golfers! I can’t wait to watch him whack it all over the pasture!”

      • Ken says:

I really doubt most Tiger Woods fans watch golf, whether he’s winning or losing. He’s just a celebrity to them.

    • Sports-realist2 says:

Ken, like I said before, they are enjoying their ‘fine wine’, sipping it ever so slowly..Their wine is called Eldrick 2000….They apparently saved warehouses of the stuff..

  13. Sports-realist2 says:

This course reminds me of the public course I play…..I can’t believe the scores would be much different…..
Yeah the bottom scoreboard is rather pointless, and is actually distracting to your eyes when you watch putts…They put all this POINTLESS ‘anniversary’ nonsense on the bottom….Like I said, these producers just are terrible…

    • lannyh says:

Fox was very good about not putting useless graphics, and they seldom did a scroll at all. I don’t know if ESPN has ever NOT had a scroll the entire day.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

Should we just award the Open Championship to DJ now or do we really have to wait 48 hours?

      • Ken says:

It is far from over. One wind blown drive and he could lose 3 shots.

There’s reasons that a guy with so much ability hasn’t won a major.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

Yeah Lanny, you have to do a ‘why espn sucks’ article…it’s way overdo……

      • Sports-realist2 says:

After two rounds at St Andrews, Nick Faldo was -12 in 1990….Eldrick was -11 in both 2000, 2005..In 2010 Louis was -12 after two rounds….
So 4 of the last 5 times, the leader has been at least 11 under after two rounds at this SO CALLED Major…That’s a 25 year span of WIDE OPEN golf….

  14. Ken says:

They’re exaggerating how difficult the conditions are. We’ve seen far worse.

  15. Sports-realist2 says:

So the DJ, Spieth group will have to get up about 2 am our est, possibly play in worse conditions ect….That ofcourse REALLY is interesting….OR ofcourse the conditions could be sublime at 7 am till they finish, THEN kick up….

  16. Ken says:

This Watson thing could have cost Els the cut.

It may have done that to Snedeker, playing 17 in the dark.

    • Sports-realist2 says:

The BEST moments are the UNFORCED ones…When you try and produce these moments, they just come off as stale and silly….
IMO though, the rules official guy probably asked Tom Watson what he wanted to do on around the 16th hole, and he said he wanted to FINISH…I’m sure the other guys just went along with it..

      • Ken says:

I’m very much into the traditions and history of the game. I have a lot of respect for Watson. But in golf, you have to accept the good with the bad and you have to respect your opponents. He looked to be getting a bit of a bad break because of the rain delay and darkness. He should have dealt with it and played 18, and maybe 17, tomorrow morning out of respect for his fellow competitors.

On the other hand, I like that he wasn’t awash in tears. The guy is a real man. And I wouldn’t be surprised at all if Els and Sneds both fully supported the decision.

      • lannyh says:

Well stated. However, I can appreciate Watson’s stoic, matter-of-fact demeanor and even find it admirable. But I totally get Tiger crying in his dad’s arms after the 1997 Masters or Bubba crying after his first Masters. Or Ray Floyd crying after watching Ken Venturi win (with heatstroke) at Colonial.

      • lannyh says:

I agree with your main point about best moments being the unforced ones. A number of years back I realized that my favorite days of the year were untitled one. The “first taste of fall.” That day when the stifling muggy heat is gone, replaced by stirring cool, dry air. That’s a bigger day to me than “official holidays” where you are told you should follow prescribed routines.

It just seems so dumb to go through some choreographed consumer dances and assure everyone it is a fun and happy time. I am rambling, but the point is that the best days, events, moments are the ones that just arise. Not the preordained “wonderful” days, events, moments.

    • lannyh says:

Yeah, why not put all the ceremonial guys together? Somehow this should have been handled better. Was a complete mess. Funny that Hideki played on and got his birdie.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

we now know they ONLY reason they didn’t blow the horn for darkness was because of Watson……I’m sure all the players will be asked how dark is was out there…So those responses will be telling……

      • lannyh says:

They are lucky DJ and Spieth and Hideki wanted to keep playing (thinking the weather was better now than tomorrow, I suppose). At least those guys stayed on the course while Watson played No. 17. I think they were long gone, though, when he teed off on No. 18.

  17. RinaldiSucks says:

if you want to complain about something, complain about Tom Rinaldi and all of his douchebagery.

    • Sports-realist2 says:

ESPN is like the JV team of a school….They really aren’t good enough to be doing these broadcasts, but they paid for them…..
Yeah, Tom Rinaldi is kinda acting CREEPY in his interviews.(granted I usually turn the channel during interview time)…It’s like he expects the players just to break down and sob, so that he can ask another lame ‘how do you feel’ question….

      • lannyh says:

I mentally tune those out. “How do you think you’ll feel when you…” Is that even a real question? People feel happy about good things and sad about bad things. Do they expect the guy to say, “If I win, I’ll be sad. I get mad when I work hard and succeed.” Or, “If I lose, I’ll be happy. I would hate to think I’m good enough to actually win. Plus, the monetary rewards would disrupt the financial worries I so dearly love.”

  18. JoseyWales says:

Steve Elling is funny on Twitter…Kyle Porter is not funny…the reason he is not funny is because he tries too hard…same with the golf telecasters…they just try to hard to be funny and clever and it comes off forced and over-exaggerated.

    • lannyh says:

I know what you mean. Kyle is young, though, which probably accounts for part of his awkwardness. Also, give him credit for having tough skin.

Elling is a tough comparison, though! He was willing to put his neck on the line and wound up banished to the Desert Sands for it. Those with the spine to do that are few and far between.

I still think Elling and Huggan’s Pond Scrum was about the best golf feature in history. I now read Tour Confidential pretty regularly, and it has none of the biting wit and commentary we got with Pond Scrum.

Oh, one other thing about Kyle, and maybe my memory is faulty, but here’s how I remember it. He was writing about “The Big Cat” a lot. I wrote in a comment, “Big Cat,” without the “The.” Someone replied and I explained that I thought it sounded even stupider, that that was why I wrote it. Ever since that time, Kyle started working “Big Cat” into his articles.

My memory could be totally flawed, but I am convinced Kyle uses “Big Cat” for the very reason that it is so asinine. Whether he came up with it or I did doesn’t matter, but I still claim credit! (Although maybe a million people did it before I thought I invented it.)

I have listened to a handful of the podcasts Kyle and some of his peers do, and they are quite interesting. Sometimes they talk about job security, commenters, what have you. I find that as interesting (or moreso) as the golf content.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

Since Porter is attached to CBS content, which is mostly awful, he will be judged for it, and rightfully so……
I’ve said many times, he’s just a blogger like us…..You’ve pointed out he using Eldrick’s names in almost all of his articles, for the purpose of getting internet hits…..Eventually though, the writer just starts to look unprofessional and uninteresting..IMO he’s already there…….
CBS is slowly ruining their website…They are eliminating most of the live chat and, the ‘freedom of speech’ has been quenched more and more there….
Without the chat options, you are left with former bloggers OVER hyping Eldrick and friends….no thanks….

      • lannyh says:

Yeah, the Facebookers also ruin the comment sections. They used to have user-operated message boards, remember those? You could even do a little blog there.

      • JoseyWales says:

I follow Kyle Porter on Twitter…he uses “Big Cat” a lot…and whatever his intent is by using the term so much…it is still annoying…very annoying. So how do these guys make money? Does the number of Twitter followers you have translate into dollars? If so, how so?

      • lannyh says:

I think probably the number of article views is a key metric. So when people (like me!) leave trolling comments to one of Kyle’s articles then check back twenty times to respond to those who bit, well, we’re putting food on Kyle’s table.

That’s okay. CBS lets most posts go unmoderated, and I can’t stand the places like GolfChannel.com. Too much censoring, and it’s got the same tedious people saying the same tedious things in the same tedious ways.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

Yeah I thought those blogs were quite interesting…
As far as your page here, do you know what it takes to MATCH what CBS had/has, as far as those blogs go?
Also, do you have a live scroll ability? In other words, once someone makes a comment it shows up right away, where another person viewing the site can see it, without refreshing the page? I’m no programmer, so you obviously know some of this stuff….

      • lannyh says:

There’s nothing like that here. You’re pretty limited in what you can do. I can’t even upload audio or video. I have to upload it to YouTube, then embed a link here. Those notifications on CBS allow real-time interaction, basically, which can be fun.

      • lannyh says:

I should add there’s nothing like that that I know of, but I’m really not that versed on WordPress.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

https://www.tawk.to/………………………this site claims to be a 100% free live chat sofware..just fyi…who knows how legit it is, but I thought I’d pass it on…..the founder of the software says: You shouldn’t have to pay to chat with the visitors on your own website. Those things require plug-ins and with my elaborate plan (i.e., free!) here at WordPress, I can’t do plug-ins. As far as I know. I’d do a few Googles, but my hopes are not high.

that’s cool..as stated you understand the programming aspect better than I……..btw saw this quote: Peter Alliss on Jordan Spieth: “He’s been 21 longer than my wife was 39.”

      • lannyh says:

It does seem like he’s been 21 forever. I sure hope he can play himself into serious contention by tomorrow night.

Kelly wacko Tilghman says “Eldrick refuses to give up”…and then the classic “he could go with a wooden stick and a stick of bubblegum, trying to get it in the hole”……….???? What kelly? Are you insane?
Wonder if Kelly understands what a NIKE contract means…..

    • JoseyWales says:

Of all the totally inept, inane, vapid and unbearable golf sock puppets on television, Kelly Tilghman is by far the worst. This woman opens her mouth and nothing worthwhile ever comes out. She is truly a no-talent airhead. And I just checked…she has almost 100,000 Twitter followers. That speaks volumes about who watches the Golf Channel….pathetic sheep.

She’s awful. I think I would have gotten her fired if I had grabbed my camera fast enough. I wrote about it; you may recall. She was interviewing Woods at some little deal on an online stream. They were waiting for the start time, but the stream was already up. She was leaning into Woods and rubbing him with with her shoulders. I said at the time that it was like a high school girl trying to woo the star QB, but since then I think it was more like how cats rub on the legs of a farmer who just milked the cow and is carrying a pail full of milk. Woods was clearly uncomfortable. Oh, how I wish I had grabbed my camera! Tiger was like, Kelly, you know I just had this whole scandal thing, and for you to act like that is really creeping me out. Anyway, I think Tilghman and Woods also shared a home at IMG, so it’s never really been a legitimate journalistic relationship. She’s been a cheerleader.

I hate that. Besides contractual obligations, what golfer ever gives up? Most play for as long as the tournaments will have them. Frankly, why wouldn’t they? I would.

      • lannyh says:

Yeah, they do that a lot. “Tiger Woods, no matter how poorly he is playing, always putts out on No. 18 and shakes the other players’ hands.” Like everyone doesn’t do that.

They should’ve completed the 2nd round. Headlights could’ve worked. Stadium lights for the future.
