When you can drop two balls 5 inches from each other, and one will end up 6 feet from the hole and the other ends up 30 yards away in a pot bunker, that course is NOT a test of skill, but of luck. It is one thing to have that on one or two greens AT THE MOST. But not all 18.
Fox Criticism: I noticed a lot of “Faux Sports” in the criticisms of Fox that I’ve seen. I’m aware that “Faux News” is an epithet that one political pep squad uses to insult the other. The point is that a sizable portion of the criticism of Fox’s golf coverage is dismissible; it’s nothing more than people bringing their political whining to sports. It’s fine for people not to like the way Fox is handling golf; I’m sure some people for legitimate reasons find it inferior. But a lot of people were going to bash Fox no matter what, for reasons having nothing to do with the actual broadcast. (You are also going to have the people affiliated with NBC bashing for a different kind of politics: the politics of the television industry.)
Personally, among many improvements, I’ve rather enjoyed not having the comedy club tryouts held during the US Open. I don’t miss McCord and Feherty and their ilk. I don’t need, “Jason is wobbling like a bowling pin in a 7-10 split.” “These greens are enough to make anybody dizzy.”
I also liked how Joe Buck kept stopping himself with his Dan Jenkins’ quote in order to let the audience hear Spieth and Greller discuss a shot. The other networks talk all over such conversations, thinking their lame attempts at humor are more interesting.
I also noticed the commercials seem to have been kept to a minimum. There was a time last night I needed to do a couple of thinks and waited for a commercial break. I had to wait and wait and wait. I realize this is a major, and all the golf networks try to stay with the action, but outside of CBS and Augusta, I don’t remember a tournament — at least down the stretch — with as few commercials.

Good points….The announcing has been mostly better than expected….Some of the announcers are ‘rooting’ instead of reporting, but some of that comes with experience….A good director should correct them on that….
I agree too. Better than I expected. Never been a Buck fa. But have to admit he’s been good.
I like the CBS crew, including Feherty and McCord, but I also don’t miss them. I do miss Sir Nick and think that he rather than Pavin, Faxon, or Flesch would have been fun to hear talking with Norman. Norman needs more experience and needs to refrain from trying to explain the cause of vertigo (was kind of funny with him stumbling over the words), but I like him.
Yeah, Faldo is great. Best in the business if you ask me.

I’m okay with Norman rooting for Day. Besides, for the past fifteen years, every announcer has been openly rooting for Tiger Woods.

I’d expect the leading score to DROP not go UP….-5 leader went to -4 after yesterday…I expect Spieth to win, and don’t expect Grace or Day to stay in it, but on the other hand a backdoor winner at this course is very possible…..
JB Holmes comes to mind, due to his driving distance…..Louis has proven back to back 66’s is possible, so if JB sticks a 66 in there, he’s at 5 under…
Also in round two when #18 played as a par four, ALL 4 current leaders bogeyed it(Spieth had double bogey)………
After winning this year, I expected good things from Holmes at The Masters. He missed the cut. Maybe this will be his big major week.

I once had a hole in one, and the very next hole I shot a 10, so I realized how silly the game of golf can be……After the hole in one I did briefly consider trying for the PGA, then after the 10, I reconsidered……
People are trying to say they made the 18th a par 5 today because Jordan complained. Even more people don’t understand why it matters what the par is. As a par 4 the players either have to carry the ball 300 yards over the left bunker or stop it before 320 yards to stay out of the right bunker and have an over 200 yard shot into an incredibly undulating green. They also put the hole location where it’s nearly impossible to 2 putt. Jordan’s right, that’s dumb, but they didn’t make it a par 5 for him. They made it a par 5 today because the wind direction would ensure that almost no one could stay out of the bunkers or reach the green in 2.
This US Open has been a bigger mental test than golf test. The golf rewards long hitters who are also aggressive putters. Also, course knowledge of where to hit it in fairways and how to use the back stops has played a role. I hated it at the beginning of the week, but now I like it.

If Jordan made another six on a hole where 280-yard drives are not long enough to play, and thereby lost the tournament by a stroke, it would have been a disaster.
Also, if he had played it down the No. 1 fairway, it would have made them look really bad.
It wouldn’t have been the first time someone intentionally hit it into the wrong fairway. I think they decided it had to be a par 5 because they didn’t want a repeat of that par 3 at Merion where people couldn’t reach it with driver. They didn’t do it to placate The Golden Child or Lee Westwood or anyone else who complained.

Said it yesterday but I’ll repeat myself. An underrated positive of the Fox broadcast is the inclusion of former USGA Executive David Fay as it relates to rules. And it’s not a token inclusion, he has been very active.
Yeah. Not sure if he would have known this, but I would have liked someone to ask him about the pairings when DJ and Grace, playing together, both finished on the same number as Day.
DJ putted out before Grace, so DJ is in the final pairing.
Really a mistake by Grace there, ofcourse he probably wasn’t thinking about it at the time, BUT his caddie should have been thinking about it…..Assuming Grace wanted to be in the last group….
What I seem to remember hearing once on a broadcast (so I guess you have to consider the source) is that it’s based on the order the cards are turned in rather than the order they holed out. I believe it was in explanation as to why Woods was in the last group even though another golfer with the same score holed out before him and some were accusing TV of influencing the pairings. But I agree, it would be nice to know for the record what actually constitutes finishing the round — even though I don’t seen to care enough to put the effort into looking it up myself. 🙂
But if that was the case JB, and you wanted to be in the last group, then the caddies should all be SPRINTING to where you turn in the cards, so they can go last….
I don’t know for sure either…Joe Buck didn’t wait very long after Dustin tapped in to announce the final pairing for today…….
Here’s from an article on this very thing: “But what about ties? Let’s say there are six golfers tied for the lead. In a case like that, the pairings and tee times are based on the order in which those six golfers posted their scores. Among those six tied players, the one who posted the score first will tee off last among that group of players; the one who posted the score last will tee off first among that group of players.”
Grace probablt wasn’t thinking. Maybe he doesn’t care? Slightly less pressure in the next to last group? Or you get a chance to post birdies first and pressure those following you.
I thought of that too SR2. That basing it on turning in the card first could lead to some mad dashes to the clubhouse. Though they would still have to be a little cautious on that lest the player turn in a incorrect scorecard in there hast to make the last group. I agree basing it on who holed out first would make more practical sense. I was just recounting what I believe a heard on a broadcast a few years ago. You were able to research the issue better than I was, I guess it just comes down to how the tournament officials define posting a score.
The other part I like is the pro tracer on darn near every hole. I said that would be a good thing a while back and it looks like Fox agrees!

With the color of the greens, some sort of highlight on the ball as it rolls would help. It takes me forever to pick up the ball on the green.
The commercial where the old man walks into the convenience store, grabs a 6-pack, and walks out with the attendant finally saying “Happy Father’s Day” is great.

You need to blast Jason Sobel on Twitter about his tweet on “perspective” regarding Nicklaus’ missed cuts vs. Tiger’s. Unreal. Yeah, let’s count Nicklaus’ rounds ion his 40s, 50s, and 60s and not Tiger’s. Tiger also missed a helluva lot of cuts as an amateur. Nicklaus percentage-wise at the same point in his career is better than Tiger on all missed cuts as a pro and one fewer in majors as a pro vs. Tiger. Real perspective, huh? I’m not on Twitter, or I would do so.
does that surprise you? Sobel is paid off to write stuff like that….Again, Steinberg/Nike pay off the media to do this type of thing……..It’s become soooo obvious in recent years, now that Eldrick is irrelevent….

We could also say that Jordan Spieth has less career cuts than Eldrick, and that TECHNICALLY would be correct too, but we know that’s a silly stat at this point……
Just looked it up. He immediately sent a following tweet showing Nicklaus with 13 pre-40 missed cuts.
knowing these writers, he was probably counting any missed cuts as an amateur too, which ofcourse doesn’t count….Nicklaus didn’t turn pro until late 1961, and had 3 missed cuts as an amateur in the majors….Otherwise he only had 4 missed cuts as a pro, up to the age of 45 years old…..Woods already has 5 at 39 years old….
It’s amazing how many media people just repeat the missed cut percentage with out bothering to ask whether it’s comparing the players numbers at a similar stage in there career, or the missed cut percentage of a player who competed into his 60’s vs. a player who is not yet 40. I think a few of these people know it’s dishonest, but it advances the narrative they want to advance, but most of them a just a bunch of sheep.

This reminds me of, what amounts to a Golf Channel Amateur Tour Tournament (went by a different name at the time) that I played in about 12 years ago. It was a national event with people from all over and was held at a course in Tennessee that was a Senior Tour site at the time, or at least had been in the past.
Tee to green the course was awesome and the layout was great. But, the greens had gotten a disease and were damn near all dirt. While, lets say, 80% of the course was great, that 20% is what everyone talked about and it left a bad impression.
And while I typed that I see one of the funniest putts all tournament by Stenson. He definitely pushed it but…that was proof how awful the greens are based on how that ball rolled.
I used to be with a lot of other folks regarding Joe Buck….he sucks.
But over the last few years, I’ve heard/seen him do some interviews on some of the talk radio and tv shows like Mike&Mike and ESPN First Take, and when he isn’t announcing, he actually comes across as a pretty cool dude. Talks very candidly and I found that be pretty entertaining.
So with that said, I feel like we’ve seen a little more of that side in his Golf announcing versus his football announcing. I really don’t mind him at all. Greg on the other hand needs some work.
One of the best of the tournament was part of his summary of day 2 where he said something to the effect of……..
“Tiger Woods….80-76….he’s out of here”…..and then proceeded to move right into something more relevant.
I liked how, on Thursday, he didn’t mind calling out Woods and Steinberg for refusing a post-round interview. Fox pays a lot of money for this event. Joe was probably thinking it might be nice if Woods gave them an interview after such a… memorable… round.
Once again another DOWN HILL putt that Jordan 3 putts….Just unnecessary with the lead to take a risk of trying to make those….
Ok anyone already tired of watching jason day walk up and down stairs and such……this must be the eldrick cam they normally use for him…
You know, it’s not that I don’t admire his hanging in there. But I also don’t need to hear about it on every shot. Or to see closeups of every step he takes.
You see and read all these tweets and interviews and quotes from various players, media types, bloggers, writers, etc…but you have to read between the lines. Most of the time what they say has a hidden agenda and should not be taken literally. They state stuff not for the facts or how they truly feel, but for a different reason…like gaining followers, attracting attention, clicks, controversy, brand recognition, etc. They gain as much attention by being wrong as for being right, and they really are not concerned with anything other than long term financial gain or notoriety. I call it “The Kanye West effect”.

How much air time will they give Eldrick, since Spieth is doing what no one has done since he did it in 2002…They can’t possibly not say that Spieth is AHEAD of everyone as far as Major victories at his age….NOW he’s won 3 events(eldrick was 4 in 1997)…….so spieth will most likely surpass that…..eldrick also only won one event in 1998(no major) so spieth could be WELL ahead of everyone….in alot of categories……..

I think winning two consecutive majors (and counting!) at age 21, combined with Woods falling short of Nicklaus, is going to cause Woods to pretty quickly fade into the background. It’s just going to look ridiculous now. Forget GC. Fox is moving into the future. They LOVE Spieth winning. Might have some monster ratings, too.
So far all I’m hearing is how great Tiger was and how it will take MULTIPLE players to fill his shoes, and Spieth isn’t anything like Jack and Eldrick and on and on and on…Gosh these people are pukes…..
How is this not ALREADY the ‘year of the Spieth’? I mean what more does he have to do? How many PGA golfers have even won 2 majors, much less in one year, and much less BACK TO BACK……I mean think how the golf channel bafoons BUILD UP 1997 in their minds, YET, Spieth has MORE majors then Eldrick had, and is one win away from matching his win totals already for the 97 season……..
Well, look, things have changed. The golf media won’t be able to continue their sui generis uber golfer act for Woods because, frankly, Spieth winning two at 21 surpassed Wood’s start, not to mention Jordan won a pro event as a teen.
They’ll continue their “Can Tiger get his game back?” stuff at Greenbrier, you can be sure, but the days of “first to do this since Tiger Woods” routine won’t have the same currency/cachet (whatever the word is) now that Jordan has done this. This was sea changing. Even GC was having to compare him to Tom Morris, for crying out loud! And Fox was saying he was first since Bobby Jones. I mean, Golf Channel may be getting paid by Nike or Steinberg, I don’t know, but they can’t completely ignore reality.

If Woods wasn’t clowning around and yucking it up in that circus sideshow that Louis was stuck in, Louis may have won this thing. -11 over his last 52 holes.

that’s interesting actually….It’s easy for Woods to NOT take it seriously cuz he’s sucking so bad, but I wonder if he realizes OR cares that he could be affecting the others in the group…..Woods NEVER used to talk when he was good….now he’s suddenly ‘chummy-guy’, but that’s because he’s lost his game…..
I think thst Woods and Fowler both behaved unprofessionally on Thursday; it was driven by Woods. Louis was playing poorly too, but was better than them. He still had a realistic chance at the cut. They didn’t by the 15th hole or so. They were both disrespectful of him. I was thinking that watching on Thursday about how tough it must have been for him.
And no, Woods doesn’t care that his actions impact others.
