EPIC: Jordan Chasing Jack

And Then There Were Two

British Open Sunday

Morning Thoughts:

  • I feel like I am living in the pages of a golf history book.  What a day awaits golf fans.
  • Chamblee and Lerner are a perfect match for NBC.  Completely immoral and incompetent.  In the ten-minute changeover window, Chamblee and Lerner mentioned Tiger Woods at least four times almost immediately.  I stopped counting and changed channels.
  • Saddest part of this week’s golf coverage?  Each day when Faldo and Gannon ended their early coverage and passed the baton to NBC.
  • Can’t wait for more color analysis from Johnny Miller today: “The ball is in the air.  Now it is bouncing on the green.  Oh, he got a hard bounce there.  It’s rolling past the hole.  It’s not horrible, but it’s farther away than he would have liked.  He won’t be pleased, but he could have done worse.”
  • Win or lose today, Jordan Spieth’s pursuit of Jack Nicklaus will be THE story for the next 25 years.  He’s wisely keeping himself healthy and avoiding short-term gimmicks.
  • I’m loving the new nickname for Spieth: America’s Golfer.  Fits like a glove.
  • If Jordan wins today, it will mean Lanny H will be sending a Make-Me-Pay check to St. Jude Children’s Hospital this year.  Go, Jordan!!!

The greats have a way to make it happen in crunch. Amazing exclamation mark by the entitled Jordan Spieth.
Though I expect back-to-back major wins for wonderkid, hopefully Kuch can rise for the Quail Hollow occasion.

Oh, I forgot it was Quail Hollow. Nice!

Jordan earned that win. He had the lead, lost it, then got it back in spectacular fashion. Yay for St. Jude’s Children’s hospital. I would have preferred Kuchar to get his first major, but after Jordan’s eagle I had to root for the proven winner.

I wonder how many people kept their TVs on NBC and got interested in the Brickyard 400 to only see 12 laps before the 3+ hour red flag began. I’m sure this rain delay coverage is really raking in new NASCAR fans, lol.

    • lannyh says:

You know what occurred to me? NASCAR fans saying: “Unbelievable! They are showing some stupid golfer sitting in a sandtrap getting his picture taken instead of the Brickyard 400!!!”

      • Kris says:

That’s hilarious. I’m guessing there’s probably only about 20 of us on earth that are fans of both golf and NASCAR.

I flipped over to Golf Channel, but, honestly, Brandel Chamblee mentioned Tiger Woods more often than he did Jordan Spieth. I’m not exaggerating. I wasn’t going to listen to the crap on such a wonderful golf day, so I went back to NBC for the race. Well, lo and behold, they were still in the pre-race show, and it was like 20 minutes until the start. I just don’t have the patience.

Last weekend, for four days, ESPN had live coverage of X-Games from Minneapolis. I wound up watching a lot of that. Be live, show action, avoid filler fluff — that’s the way to attract casual viewers. In my opinion.

Anyway, NASCAR had a window of opportunity for me, but they lost me even before the rain (or crash?). I’ll flip back later, maybe catch the end.

I’m still on a high from Jordan’s comeback!

Oh, I forgot to mention. I brought in my mail today (Sunday) that was delivered yesterday. In it was a St. Jude appeal for donations. That looked like a happy coincidence, then a cruel coincidence, then a happy occurrence of which I’ll be reminded as long as the pad of paper they included in the mailing lasts. Here’s hoping Jordan (or Rory) can win at Quail Hollow (hey, Rory has been known to do just that!) to add to the total. This is Jordan’s third win, so the “over 5 wins” provision may come into play as well.

Jordan will move to OWGR #2, but, man, he’s nowhere near DJ at #1. Even if he won the PGA, he’d not catch DJ!

  3. Speedy says:

GC’s “Live From The Open” wrap-up couldn’t wait to compare Wunderkid with the serial adulterer/DUIer.

Then, not to be outdone in a post-win press conference carried by GC, a crack reporter asked Wunderkid about a Jack comparison (3 major wins before age 24).

‘Kid deftly poo-poo’d the thought, saying it’s nice to be mentioned in such company, but that’s about all it means to him.
