Will American-by-Marriage Rory McIlroy Play for U.S. Ryder Cup Team?

Rory is marrying an American girl, so, as I see it, he is American by marriage.

Rory’s eye surgery.  I have a theory about that.  My eyes were great until age 35 or 40.  Around that time, I started having trouble telling if my tee shots sliced into the rough past the second tree or the third tree.  More than once, someone shouted at me, “Lanny, it’s the next tree!”  So I got glasses.  I only wore them when I played golf.

My putting got worse.  I didn’t really think about, though, until, I don’t know, five years later when I realized, “You know, I used to putt better than this.”  I also had a far-too-frequent habit of reading greens the the exact wrong way.  I would see a big break right when it was a big break left.  I once hit a twenty foot put hole-high and still had twenty feet left.  If that is an exaggeration, it’s not much of one.  Twas somewhat embarrassing.  In retrospect, I think my lesser putting had to do with the glasses.  I don’t know for a fact; I certainly didn’t investigate the matter scientifically.  Nevertheless, I’m left feeling my putting would have been better if I’d gotten laser surgery (did they even have that at the time?) rather than glasses.

So…  I am predicting a great year for Rory.  His putting has historically been a little spotty.  I expect him to be a consistently good putter this year; if everything else holds together, it might be him winning the Grand Slam instead of Jordan.

A song for Rory and his bride-to-be:

Near Banbridge town, in the County Down
One morning last July
From a boreen green came a sweet colleen
And she smiled as she passed me by.
She looked so sweet from her two bare feet
To the sheen of her nut-brown hair
Such a coaxing elf, sure I shook myself
For to see I was really there.

Rory is a fine Irish lad…He can marry his American sweetheart and not feel / be less Irish.
He has represented Europe in the Ryder Cup and hopefully continues to do so.
I don’t think that he’ll be like that eejit Feherty and dance around telling the world that he’s American.

Feherty chose to become an American citizen. How does that make him an idiot?

If the man had just left it at saying he is an American citizen ,that would be fine.
But when he starts (and he has) saying it’s us against them…Dancing around in a suit
that is meant to look like an American flag, then in my opinion he has gone over the line.
That is why I think that he’s an idiot..But then…He is making a good living at being an “American” so maybe I should give him a pass.

      • Ken says:

He is an American, no need for the quotes. The whole “us against them” thing with Ryder Cup has gone over the top, but it is what it is.

Feherty gives one hell of a lot of his time, money, and effort to visiting and entertaining troops, particularly those who have been severely wounded. He is a proud American. You may not like his humor but his patriotism is sincere. The country could use more “Americans” like him.

Well, one pretty big difference between Ror’s and Feherty is that Feherty actually went through the process of officially becoming a US Citizen.

On a somewhat related note, the Ryder Cup has kind of become comical because, among other reasons, pretty much everyone that plays for the Euro team lives in the US.

      • DanishDude says:

Yes, those damned Euro players coming to the US and stealing all the prizemoney and the pretty girls too. On top of that they have the audacity to win almost every Ryder Cup match in recent memory.

I’m sure Donald Trump, if elected, will put a stop to that…

      • Jim says:

The point is it’s kind of funny that the team of players representing Europe…..all live in the US.

Yes indeed, why would the choose to live where they work?
And most of them have chosen Florida, due to nice weather, great golf courses and low taxes.
    They’re a cunning bunch…

  3. Jim says:

Don’t know why I didn’t think about this earlier but Jason Day married an American so now we got both Rory and Jason…..to go with Jordan! Ryder Cup W here we come!

Danish Dude, your soccer point is excellent . The PGA is the top tour , the top players live on site. Where’s the surprise? I’d be shocked if dedicated Egyptologists camped out in The Falkland Islands most of the time.
