Saturday Semi Live Blog

I discovered this on Twitter this morning:

You are blocked from following @chambleebrandel and viewing @chambleebrandel’s Tweets.

Now if only he could block me from hearing his useless drivel on Golf Channel!

I just now noticed Chamblee blocked me, but my guess is he did it several weeks ago.  After watching Chamblee on GC one day mentioning “Tiger Woods’s dominant 2000,” I sent him a message suggesting he contact Frank Nobilo to learn about the Rock Ishii ball.

I sent that same type comment to Arron Oberholser a couple of weeks earlier, and he responded good-naturedly, even saying he agreed the ball was a factor.  Chamblee must have thin skin.  Or maybe he has professional jealousy of Nobilo; perhaps I hit a sore spot.

Chamblee does seem like he’d be hell to work around.  The kind who speaks emphatically even when he’s wrong.  He’s been saying for years that the only thing wrong with Tiger Woods is that he doesn’t swing the same way after all his injuries and aging as he did when he was 24 years old.  Brilliant analysis, eh?  Kind of like saying Bo Jackson’s only problem post-injury was his running form.

This is a very sad day for Lanny H Golf.  I feel as if we have been banished from golf’s inner sanctum.  Without access to Chamblee’s tweets, I might forget that Only Tiger Matters, that Woods is still 24 years old, that the only thing holding Woods back are those awful, icky, mean ole swing coaches.  Why, if only Tiger would listen to Brandel and — this is really simple, folks — swing like he did when he was young and uninjured, Tiger would be back!

    That is pathetic.

I think that Chamblee is a capable analyst when the topic isn’t Woods. He, Nobilo, and Rosaforte used to have some good discussions. But he also strikes me as someone who offscreen is likely a pretentious, arrogant jackass.

Lanny…having worked for a major media company (the one that Feherty just left) I can tell you this about on camera TV people: they are the most fragile, paranoid, insecure and egocentric group of folks on earth. The care only about two things: their ratings and saving their jobs, and they worry constantly about it. “How am I doing…How do I look? How do I sound? Do people like me?”
Chamblee and most of the Golf Channel crew have it made because THEY HAVE NO COMPETITION. Golf Channel is the ONLY cable outlet that is 100% golf (debatable). It’s a miracle they have made it this far with zero talent like Tilghman, Chamblee, Rymer and others. Most of these folks would not have a job if the Golf Channel did not exist. Look at Tilghman…she has been there forever and has been incompetent forever. No one else would hire her. MSNBC tried her a with some meaningless Olympics coverage and she flopped at that. It amazes me that Kelly Tilghman has over 100,000 Twitter followers. It proves that some people will follow a tree stump if it has a hashtag.
Chamblee blocked you showing his insecurity…he is scared…might say the wrong thing…lose his gravy train job. You will never see a Golf Channel employee engage in a “Twitter War”…too risky. If you want the definition of Political Correctness look no further than the Golf Channel. They are a milquetoast, no-talent bunch that continues down the road of mediocrity because they have no one going up against them…and they aim to keep it that way.
    Enjoy your exile.

Very interesting. I suppose that’s true for the bulk of them: it’s either Golf Channel or a “regular job.” A “real job.”

I’ve been watching college football pregame shows all morning, and they are so lively compared to GC. And funny. They don’t mind taking shots at each other. Yes, a lot of it is scripted, but the humor on GC never has a bite. It’s the safe Today Show crap, like, “Look at those fancy shoes you’re wearing!” “Oh yeah, look at your fancy hat!”

When Roger Maris broke Babe Ruth’s single-season home run record, no one hesitated to point out that he did it in 162 games, not 154 games. With Woods, these guys keep their heads in the sand when it comes to Woods’s Rock Ishill ball in 2000.

…….. Chamblee should remember he was a VERY average golfer…..YET, over time, all these analysts start to think of themselves as experts at everything….We all know that Chamblee is talking out his azz most of the time, as he never went through what SUCCESSFUL PGA golfers went through……
…….Now if they had a show on ‘HOW TO BE A BELOW AVERAGE PGA GOLFER’, then that golf channel cast(except Duval), would be well qualified…..
…….If we didn’t live in such a PC-land, it would be SO easy to overtake the golf channel on another network….

      • JoseyWales says:

Chamblee was a nobody as a pro who became a somebody at the Golf Channel where lack of talent will get you on the air as long as you work for cheap and kiss enough azz.

      • Ken says:

You don’t need to have been a great player to comment on golf nor to analyze swings.

      • lannyh says:

Ken, I agree 100 percent. I don’t think there is any correlation between golf skill and announcing skill.

      • Sports-realist. says:

…….People put in the position of analyst or announcer, especially those who are former NON successful PGA golfers should announce with some HUMILITY….
……Over time, people like Chamblee, who CRAVES being in a ‘power’ spot like this, since he couldn’t do it on the PGA, tend to lose perspective….
……Chamblee is NO expert, but he tries and acts like everyone is waiting for his imput or analysis…….
……This is where we always to back to Peter Alliss, in that he knows how to announce, without sounding over the top or arrogant ect……

      • lannyh says:

I agree with you about Chamblee’s demeanor, but it would still suck even if he had won twenty majors.

He is the guy who thinks if he digs in his heels and talks the loudest and interrupts the most, that makes him “right.”

I contacted him on two occasions. The first was to point out that Woods CAN’T swing like he did “with Butch” because Woods has suffered too many injuries. Woods himself has said on multiple occasions that this is the case. But Chamblee just keeps on with his idiotic schtick that “all Woods needs to do” and “he was stupid to have ever changed,” etc.

The second was to mention the Rock Ishii ball and how Chamblee’s deifying Woods’s “dominance” in 2000 was just as asinine as his “all Woods needs to do is use his 24 year old swing.”

  3. JoseyWales says:

Very true…you can be a mediocre player and blow smoke on just about anything…especially at the Golf Channel.

    • Sports-realist. says:

……Today, Chamblee would like to talk to you all about how to drive the Space Shuttle…..He’s seen the shuttle live and on tv, so he must know what he’s talking about…He says the space shuttle would drive faster, if it would use more gas pedal, then it would get to space faster—or so Chamblee says….

  4. Sports-realist. says:

Also, this ‘live’ Moscow euro tour is anything but…It’s already over and Slattery won….It’s about 45 minutes behind the real score….Why they are allowed to keep LIVE on their description is beyond me…

    • lannyh says:

I always try not to ruin it for people who don’t know the outcome…

    • lannyh says:

Also, they almost always show Euro Tour events live, but there is a pocket of time zones for which it doesn’t make sense. I don’t blame GC for delaying this. Few Americans are going to set their clock for 1 am to watch the Russian Open.

No one criticizes GC more than me, but they do a great job with their live coverage, and it just made sense to delay this one.
