Is Tiger Woods the next Jordan Spieth?

Lanny Called It!!!

Over at CBS Golf, I wrote this as a comment to Kyle Porter’s Expert Picks column:

I’m taking Tiger Woods this week. I think he’s peaking. His swing is finally clicking. He was close last week.

I picked Woods before the tournament began.  It’s a matter of record.

Ten minutes in and I’m turning off Golf Channel’s live coverage.  They just showed two or three minutes of Woods missing a putt.  I’m not kidding.  They replayed the putt, they replayed his reaction, they replayed his reaction again, this time in slow motion, etc.

All while telling you how Woods “moves the needle.”  Yes, they still use that old cliche.  I don’t know who the announcers are, but they clearly live in 2001.  It’s not Nick and Terry, I can tell you that.

Frank Nobilo now…  “Hoge is -11, but clearly the focus is on Woods.”

Sneds Posts 61, Golf Channels Leads With Woods

Does that many any sense at all?

“Thirty thousand fans today, mostly due to Tiger Woods.”  Mostly due to Tiger Woods?  Last year, they got less than half that number?

Woods Bogeys No. 1 !

Golf Channel will not be happy…

Golf’s Super Bowl Has Started!!

Tiger Woods has just teed off in what is the most important round of his life.  What happens from here is dependent on today’s play.  His legacy is on the line.  I’ve never seen a round of golf with so much riding on it.  Buckle your seat belt!

Rejuvenated Tiger Woods Tees Tees Off in Hour!

The golf event of the year continues in just over an hour.  Tiger Woods, who has not won in over two years, is on the verge of victory at the Wyndham in Greensboro, North Carolina.  A win would revitalize his careere and be a giant step on the road to his ultimate goal of surpassing Jack Nicklaus’s record of 18 majors.  (Of course, knowledgeable golf experts admit Woods’s 142 consecutive made cuts is a vastly more impressive feat than winning 18 majors.)

History is on the line.  But, then, isn’t it always when we are talking about golf’s all-time greatest, Tiger Woods?

Amusing?  I pulled up Google Top Stories and found this list:

top2Woods being sandwiched between Ashley Madison and Bruce Jenner made me laugh.

Inconvenient Truth III:  Champions Tour player Davis Love III is now leading at Wyndham, three shots ahead of Woods.  I don’t remember DLIII leading Rory, Jordan, or Jason any time lately.  But surely I have a faulty memory…

Kind of spoils the golf media narrative, doesn’t it.

Media Madness:

Even if you factored in the contingent leisure force, the hippie counterculture was small. The sensationalized press coverage of the period has left a permanent image of the late nineteen-sixties as a time when everyone was tripping or stoned. In 1967, when Didion’s article came out, only one per cent of college students reported having tried LSD. In 1969, only four per cent of adults said they had smoked marijuana. Recreational drug use soared in the nineteen-seventies, but the press was no longer interested. The whole thing had stopped being sexy.

That’s from a New Yorker review of a new biography about Joan Didion.  So what’s it got to do with golf?  Well, it’s the media coverage.  Illegal drug use in the 1960’s was not a big problem, but the media presented it that way; in the middle of the 1970’s illegal drug use was a big problem, but the media had grown tired of the story so didn’t cover it.

Pay particular attention to this part: “The sensationalized press coverage of the period has left a permanent image of the late nineteen-sixties as…”

That permanent image does not match the reality, but it is permanent.  Does that remind you at all of the golf media?

I Missed It:  I meant to turn on Morning Drive to catch the opening.  I’m sure it was Tiger Tiger Tiger, but I got caught up in the Donald Trump circus on CNN and forgot about the Tiger Woods Circus on Golf Channel.  Oh, well, it’s the top of the hour now, I’m sure we’ll get another onslaught.

Well, they didn’t disappoint.  Gary Williams stumbled and fumbled his way through saying Woods playing this week was bigger than Michael Jordan and bigger than North Carolina Final Four basketball.

Gary Williams:  “He wasn’t the only one to post 64, there were three others.”  Yes, and three others who shot 63, and two others who shot 62.

Now, Rymer is doing a segment on how to putt, using Woods as his model.

Why don’t these Golf Channel clowns paint their faces and wear big red noses?

Okay, I lasted twenty minutes.  Charlie Rymer screaming into the camera WWE-style was the final straw.  Back to CNN and the Trump circus.  At least they have both pro- and anti-Trump people on; there is no protection of Trump just because he “moves the needle.”

Rymer must have watch the CNN Special on Morton Downey Jr. last night.

  2. JoseyWales says:

And now shackelford has joined the fantasy golf craze…the grand prize? Callaway golf clubs…what else?

  3. JoseyWales says:

love this quote from Mike Bianchi tweeted by Steve Elling about Tiger Woods’ round yesterday: ”
“those are just nerve endings, the last twitches before rigor mortis.”

    • lannyh says:

Feherty is a total Woods cheerleader, so I wouldn’t put too much emphasis on his answer to that question. I bet no one writes an article like that one next April, though. Woods just isn’t relevant any more. That tweet you mentioned seems to be pretty close to the truth.

Golf Channel is no longer able to come up with topics to keep Woods relevant. Paige was going on about how Woods “seems happier” or somesuch, as if that somehow is sports news. (Of course a-holes always get very friendly when they no longer hold the cards.) Rymer started talking about how his kids are so important to him now. Well, (1) he had those kids in 2007 and 2009 (2) Jason Day has a kid, and another on the way, and he just won the PGA Championship.

Golf Channel is at the point where they are flapping their lips just to fill the time.

  4. JoseyWales says:

another quote from Bianchi about Woods and the golf media….and oh so true…

“Never in my lifetime have I seen one sport’s popularity so dependent on one athlete”

    • lannyh says:

That’s not true, though. An objective look at the numbers shows Woods adds TV viewers, but that’s pretty much it. The idea of golf being dependent on Woods is media BS on par with the media selling the idea that the late 60’s were a time of ubiquitous hippies and a population high on drugs. That’s not factual, but it’s the media narrative.

  5. Kris says:

Bigger than Michael Jordan and NC teams in the Final Four? Hell to the no. I can’t believe someone who was born in Hickory and lived in Charlotte for so many years would speak such sacrilege. Tiger Woods’ presence is a skidmark in the underwear of North Carolina.

  6. Ken says:

Been a very long time for DL3. Maybe he’ll have a good week. He’s been clinging to the regular tour for some reason. I applaud that for the rare member of the 50+ crowd that can still play, but he’s not been competitive for a number of years now. I’ve been wondering why he doesn’t go full time on the Champions Tour.

    • lannyh says:

I think he clings to the PGA Tour because he has that 20-win lifetime exemption and takes advantage of it.

      • Ken says:

I get that, but it seems like his recent years scream “give up, go to the senior tour.”

There were guys who I thought jumped to the senior tour too much, too soon. Floyd and Irwin could still play the regular tour but largely gave it up shortly after turning 50. In Love’s case, it’s time (Palmer stayed on the regular tour longer than he should have too). But maybe he’ll prove me wrong this week. Great start.

      • lannyh says:

I wasn’t contradicting you, I just meant that he has that luxury a lot of others of his age don’t. Of course, some of the older guys also get exemptions into their local tourneys.

On the other side, Jimenez skipped the WGC Firestone a few weeks ago to play the Senior Tour event! I thought that was pretty cool.

      • Bird says:

Close to home base is another easy reason.

  7. TruthTeller says:

    Sneeeeedeker on the move!

  8. OverTheHill says:

I feel a 75 coming on for Tiger today.

  9. Bird says:

Re TOP STORIES, it’s not Bruce Jenner, “Call me, Caitlyn!”
Wondering if Tiger post-40 will be a TG candidate? “Call me, Tigress!”

  10. TruthTeller says:

I’ll stop by and serve you up your plate of crow when Tiger doesn’t win this weekend.
