Sunday Greenbrier Semi Live Blog

7:00 pm Update:  Great tourney.  Wedge putting, four-way playoff, life-changing win, etc.  I hope Kisner can get a W before too much longer.  Now, it’s Jordan Week.  Then Jordan Grand Slam Watch the following week.

Is it just me, or is Golf Channel in Twilight Zone territory regarding Woods?  They are obsessing over him like it was 2000.  Just bizarre.  A very easy course, he finishes T-32 and will rise from #220 to about #210.  They act like the improvement from yesterday to today was some kind of world-changing event.  He went from 71 to 67.  Keegan Bradley went from 71 to 64; did you even hear his name mentioned today?  Woods lost 0.25 strokes on the greens today; Keegan gained 0.6; call it a stroke difference.  Keegan beat Woods by 3.  Subtract one stroke for a better putting day, and he still beats him by two.

Golf Channel was teasing, “Is Tiger hitting the ball better than he ever has?”

I just really don’t get it.  Are they trolling to get people like me to respond?

Oh, by the way, I followed Tiger Tracker for a while this morning, and, kidding aside, it’s sad to read the comments of the people tweeting Tiger Tracker.  It’s like they don’t understand, or can’t accept, that Woods is old and injury-prone.  Tiger Tracker is more realistic than they are.  Anyone who thinks those people are “golf fans” and not “Tiger fans” is out to lunch.  We have Jordan Spieth going for a Grand Slam, and they ask the most tedious questions about Woods’s “progress.”

“They are not even acquaintances.” — An outraged Mark Steinberg on Tiger Woods and Amanda Dufner.

10:40 am  Greenbrier is playing easy.  Twenty-nine players on the course, and only three of them over par.

10:20 am  Here’s the link to the PGA Tour’s player page.  Take a look.

Tiger Woods is the feature player.  Today’s date is July 5, 2015.  Tiger Woods is ranked OWGR #220.  He has not won a tournament in two years.  He has not won a major in seven years.

Tiger Woods is the feature player.

Rory McIlroy is the world’s number one player, and has won four majors in the past four years.  Jordan Spieth is the world’s number two player, and has won the first two legs of this year’s grand slam.

Tiger Woods is the feature player.

I found out about this just yesterday when I read an article by Emily Kay., which contained this:

But until [Woods] loses his spot as the main man on the tour website’s “Players” page…

Like I said yesterday, that sentence stopped me in my tracks.  This is 2015, not 2001.  How the hell is Woods still the marquee player?

Add to his poor play the news that he broke up Jason Dufner’s marriage.  The PGA Tour is an organization of the players.  How cool is it for a member to end the marriage of one of their own?

I contacted the PGA Tour last night to make them aware of the situation:

l2pgaIt occurs to me that we, as golf fans, need to pressure the PGA Tour to stop dragging down golf by clinging to the past of Tiger Woods.  I get it: he used to be good.  He used to be Mr. Clean image.  Kids were supposed to idolize him: “I am Tiger Woods.”  That fell apart six years ago, and this Amanda Dufner scandal is even worse.  To repeat: Woods is OWGR #220, hasn’t won a major in seven years, and hasn’t won anything in two years.

Totally bizarre.  Or to be more accurate, corrupt.

We, as golf fans, must put pressure on the PGA Tour to feature another player such as Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth.  I’m not sure how best to organize this, but it wouldn’t hurt if everyone could send tweets, e-mails, Facebook posts, phone calls, banner planes flying over tournaments, whatever, to the PGA Tour.

When TGC, NBC, or the tour complains about poor ratings or declining interest, they have only themselves to blame. Hockey’s featured player isn’t Jagr. Baseball isn’t pushing Ryan Howard. Why does golf promote some guy whose game is a disaster and whose personal life is an embarrassment? Any other sport promotes it’s stars. Casual golf fans can’t even identify the sport’s current stars because of the obsession with a has-been.

  2. JoseyWales says:

Even though the Golf Channel claims their TV ratings are “better than ever”…it’s a lie.
Here are Golf Channel Nielsen Ratings from the first 13 weeks of 2015 compared to 2013, 2014…
GC Prime Time (viewers per hr. ave.) 2013-173,000…2014-138,300…2015-118,000
GC Total day (viewers per hr. ave) 2013-140,600…2014-125,888…2015…96,750
All the arrows point down…a 68% decline from 2013 to 2015. The GC spin doctors can bob and weave all they want…but the viewer numbers are moving in the wrong direction.
In 2013, it was common to have GC Prime Time numbers over 200,000 per hour…
In 2015, not one week has topped the 200,000 mark…the closest they came was the week of the Players Championship at 170,000.

    • lannyh says:

If you ask me, they are like the print media. They are clinging to the past (Tiger Woods in the case of the golf media, newspapers/magazines in the case of the dinosaur media companies) when the world is moving in another direction.
The golf media needs sweeping reform and the current embedded management has shown they are incapable.
One thing, though, 2013 was the “Tiger is Back” year. If you compare to other years, you will see different results. I always like to point out that a regular tour event in 1975 (Pebble Beach Pro-Am) drew a higher rating than all but two or three of Woods’ highest ratings.

  3. JoseyWales says:

    the trend is down…just sayin’

  4. Kris says:

Not even acquaintances? Methinks thou doth protest too much. What cracks me up about the second picture is Jillian is looking where Keegan’s looking, Amanda is looking at Jason and is part of the conversation he and Tiger are having, and Lindsey looks like she’s contemplating a murder she just witnessed.

On the topic of golf, congrats to Bernd Wiesberger. I’m rooting for Sean O’Hair because I love a good redemption story, but I’d be happy with pretty much anyone.

    • lannyh says:

Wiesberger has become a top player. I was for Kaymer a bit more, but Bernd played solidly and closed it out in style.
I’m for Justin Thomas, but, like you say, lots of good stories around the lead. Bohn wouldn’t be a bad one.

    • Ken says:

What, you don’t often have women with whom you’re not even acquainted place rodents on your shoulder? Man, if I had a nickel for every time that’s happened to me.

      • Kris says:

LOL! That reminds me of the time when I was a kid and a guy in the grocery store parking lot asked my mom what he should do with the baby squirrel he had in a shoebox. He didn’t put it on anybody’s shoulder though, which I found disappointing.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

Amanda has PROBABLY cheated on Dufner any number of times, this time it just happened to be with Eldrick……
I remember someone once said, you can tell how BIG of a lie a lawyer is telling you by the way they minimizes the truth……

  5. OddsMaker says:

    Over/under 3 way playoff?

  6. lannyh says:

Golf Channel going on about how Woods shot three rounds in 60’s and how great that is, but this is a par-70 course. The cut was 2-under.
Woods said if he had putted better, he could have been in contention. Well, every one of his fellow T-31 finishers could say the same thing.

Woods seems subdued. First time he spoke to media in three days. I wonder if he knows something about a second Amanda shoe about to drop. If they asked him about Amanda today, he could have no-commented, then left, and not had to face them again until the Brit (where he’ll be asked, you know).

    • Sports-realist2 says:

Really if you think about it….The Masters, The Greenbrier, and The Old Course—- 3 of the easiest courses on the PGA tour….
The Greenbriers last 5 winning scores: 16,13,16,10, and -22(YES MINUS TWENTY TWO)…..People forget Appleby shot a 59 on this golf course…..So either Stuart is one of the best golfers, OR this is just a very easy course……

  7. Sports-realist2 says:

Justin Thomas played a very aggressive speed for a side to side putt…ends up 4 putting it….

  8. Sports-realist2 says:

Lol..Robert Streb, my hero…Broke his putter and now has to putt with an iron for the last 6 holes…..
I’m left handed, and one time I threw my club in a pond(never to be seen again), during the middle of the round….I had to putt RIGHT handed with someone else’s putter for the rest of the round…..If only the pond hadn’t gotten in the way…

    • Sports-realist2 says:

and he just made a 30 footer…NOW if that had been somebody else(I won’t name any names), it would have been treated as the best putt in the history of golf…..These lapdog announcers treated Strebs putt as about as ho-hum 30 footer with a wedge as you can get…….

    • Ken says:

Suddenly I’m pulling for Streb. Who needs a putter? 3 under the last four holes.

That 4 putt was really ugly by Thomas.

    • Kris says:

It would be hilarious if Streb won without a putter. I’ll be surprised if -13 is good enough for a playoff. I kept trying to remember what tournament Kisner won, then I realized he hasn’t won, he’s just the king of losing playoffs.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

looks like 13 could be the playoff number……heck even ohair and bohn and molder could get that…

  9. Ken says:

Mr. Justice’s green jacket looks like a blanket with a couple of buttons on it.

  10. Sports-realist2 says:

Just doesn’t seem right if you have 5 guys in a playoff on the par 3, 18th…..They really should go back to the 17th par 5…..

    • Sports-realist2 says:

Ok 4 players……Lee and Hearn with almost identical putts that they had when they played the 18th in regulation, while the other two with very difficult up and downs

  11. Sports-realist2 says:

Yeah a par here could do it…..

    • Sports-realist2 says:

considering how wet it was, I thought Hearns shot would stop and possibly spin back..instead, he’s got a 6–at best, barring a chip in…

      • Sports-realist2 says:

Danny won it twice basically, going birdie, birdie in a playoff, you should win….alot of guys had left it way short, but the wet conditions favored lee’s long putt, as he knew he had to blast it….

      • lannyh says:

yeah, a bit of bad fortune

  12. Sports-realist2 says:

oh, i guess it was only a birdie par finish…

    • lannyh says:

Fun playoff to end an interesting event. Next up… Jordan Spieth!

    • Kris says:

Still, Danny Lee came out of nowhere and won it. Kisner keeps his title as the king of losing playoffs. Good tournament, and I’m definitely looking forward to next week.

    • lannyh says:

Funny how so darn many were bunched so tightly. Justin Thomas seems to have one round of ruination per tournament. Today it was rd 4, but he’s lost it in earlier rounds, too. If he could put four good rds together, maybe he could get it done.

Important news update ! Tiger Woods did not win the Greenbrier today ! We are not sure who did but I’m sure who ever it was will be handed a handsome check. Back to Tiger Woods. Tiger scratched his nose on the 17th hole today before lining up that 20 footer. Nope no birdie. Anything else that happened today was of no importance. Have a nice evening !

    • Sports-realist2 says:

Hey you might get a job at the golf channel….You have that natural knack…I can’t quite put my finger on it, but you have it my friend….it’s pure genius…..

      • Anonymous says:

Thanks man ! I enjoy satire a little too much. But back to Tiger. Here he is driving off in his Buick er uh I mean Cadilac or something. I can smell a victory coming soon !
        Good nite.

      • Anonymous says:

Uh thank you , thank you very mush.

  14. GolfCoverage says:

The media has dibs on the Tiger coverage and Lanny has dibs on Jordan. Who will cover everyone else? I mean, surely there are a few more golfers playing the next two weeks, aren’t there?

    • lannyh says:

Rory and Rickie and a few others are playing in Scotland this week. I’m glad Jordan is playing the Deere, but the tournament managers there seemed to think it would be fine if Jordan skipped, so I worry about him flying over so shortly ahead of the event. I think Hogan went over about three weeks early! I’m sure he has a plan. Maybe a local caddy is filling them in on the details of St. Andrews.

  15. Sports-realist2 says:

Lanny, as you know we’ve been told that EVEN if someone wins FIVE MAJORS IN A ROW, bla, bla, bla…..The golf channel is just living up to their own LAME standards of broadcasting…
This is why IF Jordan were to win his THIRD straight major, we’d see the golf channel embarrass itself on a HILARIOUS scale….
I don’t watch the golf channel much anymore, BUT when I do, I’ve yet to see a REAL debate when it comes to the REALITY vs FANTASY of Eldrick……
I thought that you’d see more challenges from David Duvall, but he just seems to sit there and allow all of them to wax poetic WITHOUT challenging their views…..
When all you have is YES men on a panel, it just isn’t interesting….

    • lannyh says:

It’s depressing. They just aren’t going to back off. It’s a vicious circle. The more they insist only Tiger matters, the more invested they are, and the less fans are learning about the other players.

In some regards, though, this was kind of an off week. It was a pretty weak PGA Tour event. So Tiger was their star. But when I think of the British Open, I immediately think of Jordan going for the Slam, and Rory not wanting Jordan to steal his glory. I mean, all this day-to-day “Is Tiger improving?” stuff, to me, is so uninteresting when you look at the top players in golf. The Rory-Jordan heavyweight battle is better than anything since Jack-Arnie. It’s really unfortunate that the Golf Channel (and most of the rest of the American golf media) can’t let go of what they THOUGHT was going to happen. They invested everything in the idea that Woods would win 19 or at least be close enough to make every major, “Could the unlikely happen?” But, four back, no one much thinks Woods “chasing Jack” is interesting at all.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

One guy in a comment of an article said it best:
Once it was bought by Comcast who subsequently purchased NBC/Universal, you knew it was going to go the route of other NBC shows (i.e MSNBC, CNBC). To me the greatest disappointment is Morning Drive. They turned it from a nice little morning show about golf and turned it into the Golf Today show. Way too much emphasis on the on air personalities and “fluff gossip”.
I googled ‘why golf channel sucks’ and one of your articles/posts whatever they should be called came up….That was March 2012…..(time to write another ‘why golf channel sucks’ article—it probably gets alot of hits)…….
Part of the problem is you have MOST of the analysts with ZERO credibility and pathetic PGA careers.
With FOX getting the US Open, AND with Eldrick entering his 40’s, it wouldn’t surprise me to see FOX try and buy the Golf channel AND get it…….
The current ‘powers that be’ of the GC consider Eldrick their ONLY selling point, so let’s say another AMANDA or PED thing finally goes public, to where they can no longer cover it up…A sale wouldn’t surprise me…

      • lannyh says:

Yeah, I need to do another Why GC Sucks article. Those always got a lot of hits from search engines. Not surprising people search for “Golf Channel sucks” so often. So much of their propaganda is ingrained that I don’t even think about it the way I once did, unless it’s something new or particularly idiotic. I should write another one, analyze a complete show, for those who are just now feeling the need to google “golf channel sucks.” If they obsess over Woods Brit Open week, maybe I’ll do one then. Would be fun.

  16. Barry Burn says:

Has there been any discussion of Tiger’s drop on Friday anywhere on the internet, not counting here?

I guess it all goes away.

  17. Anonymous says:

He took a drop on the fairway ? How rude !

  18. BSTV says:

This Altered Course BS the GC is running….is anyone really watching this junk?
