7:00 pm Update: Great tourney. Wedge putting, four-way playoff, life-changing win, etc. I hope Kisner can get a W before too much longer. Now, it’s Jordan Week. Then Jordan Grand Slam Watch the following week.
Is it just me, or is Golf Channel in Twilight Zone territory regarding Woods? They are obsessing over him like it was 2000. Just bizarre. A very easy course, he finishes T-32 and will rise from #220 to about #210. They act like the improvement from yesterday to today was some kind of world-changing event. He went from 71 to 67. Keegan Bradley went from 71 to 64; did you even hear his name mentioned today? Woods lost 0.25 strokes on the greens today; Keegan gained 0.6; call it a stroke difference. Keegan beat Woods by 3. Subtract one stroke for a better putting day, and he still beats him by two.
Golf Channel was teasing, “Is Tiger hitting the ball better than he ever has?”
I just really don’t get it. Are they trolling to get people like me to respond?
Oh, by the way, I followed Tiger Tracker for a while this morning, and, kidding aside, it’s sad to read the comments of the people tweeting Tiger Tracker. It’s like they don’t understand, or can’t accept, that Woods is old and injury-prone. Tiger Tracker is more realistic than they are. Anyone who thinks those people are “golf fans” and not “Tiger fans” is out to lunch. We have Jordan Spieth going for a Grand Slam, and they ask the most tedious questions about Woods’s “progress.”
“They are not even acquaintances.” — An outraged Mark Steinberg on Tiger Woods and Amanda Dufner.
10:40 am Greenbrier is playing easy. Twenty-nine players on the course, and only three of them over par.
10:20 am Here’s the link to the PGA Tour’s player page. Take a look.
Tiger Woods is the feature player. Today’s date is July 5, 2015. Tiger Woods is ranked OWGR #220. He has not won a tournament in two years. He has not won a major in seven years.
Tiger Woods is the feature player.
Rory McIlroy is the world’s number one player, and has won four majors in the past four years. Jordan Spieth is the world’s number two player, and has won the first two legs of this year’s grand slam.
Tiger Woods is the feature player.
I found out about this just yesterday when I read an article by Emily Kay., which contained this:
But until [Woods] loses his spot as the main man on the tour website’s “Players” page…
Like I said yesterday, that sentence stopped me in my tracks. This is 2015, not 2001. How the hell is Woods still the marquee player?
Add to his poor play the news that he broke up Jason Dufner’s marriage. The PGA Tour is an organization of the players. How cool is it for a member to end the marriage of one of their own?
I contacted the PGA Tour last night to make them aware of the situation:
It occurs to me that we, as golf fans, need to pressure the PGA Tour to stop dragging down golf by clinging to the past of Tiger Woods. I get it: he used to be good. He used to be Mr. Clean image. Kids were supposed to idolize him: “I am Tiger Woods.” That fell apart six years ago, and this Amanda Dufner scandal is even worse. To repeat: Woods is OWGR #220, hasn’t won a major in seven years, and hasn’t won anything in two years.
Totally bizarre. Or to be more accurate, corrupt.
We, as golf fans, must put pressure on the PGA Tour to feature another player such as Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth. I’m not sure how best to organize this, but it wouldn’t hurt if everyone could send tweets, e-mails, Facebook posts, phone calls, banner planes flying over tournaments, whatever, to the PGA Tour.
