Monday Thoughts

Fox Fears:  My high hopes for Fox Sports are starting to turn into fear.  After watching Fox Sports’ horrid “Blair Witch Project” camera work at a women’s golf event a month ago, I’ve grown very leery.  Another negative: Fox Sports 1 has the rights to the Women’s World Cup of soccer which is taking place this week, and there seems to be almost no U.S. Open buildup.  No live shows from Chambers Bay that I’ve seen yet.  Golf Channel is going to have vastly more coverage prior to the tournament’s start.

US Open Weather:  Looks good, with only a 10 percent chance of rain Thursday; 40 percent chance of showers on Friday; 0 percent chance of rain on Saturday and Sunday.

OWGR Roundup:  Fabian Gomez, with his St. Jude win in Memphis, rose to #131 from #288.  Phil Mickelson rose from #19 to #17 on the strength of his T-3 at Memphis.  Tiger Woods fell to #195.

Morning Drive:  Can this show get any worse?  I can’t handle all the forced happy talk.  And with the reality shows cancelled (thankfully), the “Altered Course” promos are kind of sad or morbid.

Rory’s Home Field Advantage: Did you know the company responsible for installing the fescue grass at Chambers Bay is based in Dublin, Ireland?

While Graeme McDowell, Shane Lowry and Darren Clarke complete the Irish challenge, a further flavour of these parts has been contributed by the Dublin company, Turfgrass Consultancy, who were responsible for the agronomy at this, their first Major venue.

Euro Seven Roll Call:  Who is playing this week?

  • Thongchai Jaidee
  • Miguel Angel Jimenez
  • Marc Warren
  • Stephen Gallacher
  • Branden Grace
  • Anirban Lahiri

Six of the seven!  The only one of the Euro Seven not in the field this week is Thomas Bjorn.  Enjoy, jalnichols!

World rankings are like when you are on a diet…..When you’ve lost those 10-50 lbs or whatever, you are telling EVERYONE how you are doing, BUT if you put the weight back on, you quit talking about it all together…..

After seeing the weather forecast and pictures of the greens, I think this’ll be worse than the massacre at winged foot. The Washington coast without rain for 4 days is insane to me, and those fescue greens will be too much for these pampered pros. It’s going to play like an 1890s British Open course on steroids. I don’t have high hopes for the course or the coverage. I predict a lot of complaining from the golfers about the course and a lot of complaining from the fans about the coverage being awful. Also, at one point I guarantee they will randomly move golf coverage to FS2 or FoxNews to make room for soccer or baseball on FS1 or Fox.

Well… at least the part about the 1890’s sounds cool!

I hope it’s not such a bizarre course that it turns the event into a random lottery.

I agree, unexpected winners like a European Tour regular or an amateur are great, but flukey, last-man-standing winners are no fun. (That was me earlier, I forgot to sign it)

Personally, the more chaos, confusion and consternation during a US Open, the better I like it.

I don’t want to see a MAJOR that rewards random players instead of the best players in the game. It’s bad enough when the weather does that; it would be a shame to have a course that does it inherently.
