Dear Comcast, Keep firing people at Golf Channel

Golf Channel needs a housecleaning from top to bottom.  Fire them all, let the unemployment office straighten them out.

I turned on Golf Central Pregame to see what they covered.  Jordan Spieth — America’s #1 player, OWGR #2, Masters champion, four wins in the past six months — shots -4 and sits T-5.  Tiger Woods shot +1 and sits T-86.

Fifteen minutes in, here are the stats for players being discussed:

  • Tiger Woods:  9:50
  • Cheyenne Woods:  1:20
  • Jordan Spieth:   0:08 (first mentioned after Cheyenne Woods)

Second half of show:

  • Tiger Woods: 2:04
  • Jordan Spieth: 0:36

Folks, freaking Cheyenne Woods got twice the amount of coverage as Jordan Spieth!  Freaking unreal!

We need to start a campaign to have Comcast clean house.  Let them know we are going to boycott all Golf Channel’s sponsors until they end their discrimination.  Start with FedEx, Bridgestone, and some kind of booze of which I missed the name.  Don’t buy any James Patterson books.  Don’t buy from Dick’s.  Tell Comcast to get their Golf Channel act together or else we fans will see their advertisements as ANTI-advertisements.

This is the angriest I’ve been in my entire life.

I envy the ease of your life if that’s the angriest you’ve ever been. You aren’t alone in your frustration, though. Cheyenne is leading her tournament, but if she wasn’t a Woods she wouldn’t have gotten that much air time. How long is it going to take for the golf media to realize they’ve lost their audience? The general public dislikes Tiger and the majority of his fans have given up on him. Bob Harig was defending the Tiger inundation, but Kyle Porter was calling Tiger fans delusional and saying (joking?) he only talks about Tiger because of contractual obligations. I’ll have no problem boycotting golf channel sponsors because James Patterson is a hack and I don’t have erectile dysfunction.

Not buying the golf channel will be ANY different, besides the lame shows……Safe to say the ‘featured group’ will be Eldrick in EVERY round he plays(seems to hardly play anymore)….Now they HAVE to try and make him part of the STORY, even when he’s not….Tomorrow, it will ALL be about MAKING THE CUT, CHECK THE CUT LINE, HEY WHERE IS THE CUT…..Remember they made a big deal about Eldrick making a 15 footer to make the cut the last time he played…..Oh he pumped his fist, that must mean something—ofcourse he just faded the rest of the week……

    • lannyh says:

Yeah, I’m curious to see what the Spieth/Woods ratio during tomorrow’s broadcast window will be.

And this whole, “Wow, isn’t this so un-Tigerlike to see him playing this poorly.” And, “He has a two-way miss.” Well, guys, we’ve had several years of that now. How can you continue to act like it’s fascinating? It’s the expectation. A good round is more of a surprise.

If you pick any player no one has ever heard of, and put great emphasis on his every shot, hole, round, tournament, instructor, caddy, hug, grimace, smile, curse, or — from Woods coverage today — taking his shoe off to rearrange his sock — you can make HIM seem important. Just by talking nonstop about him. But Woods is playing like a journeyman golfer now. He’s never going to be young again. It’s just silly what they do at this point.

    • Sports-realist2 says:

and Cheyenne is propped up because it keeps Eldrick in the conversation, even though he REALLY has nothing to do with her golf success or failure…..

      • lannyh says:

Right. Her father and Tiger Woods don’t even speak. There is bad blood. I like her, and she is gracious in handling an uncomfortable situation for her.

  3. JoseyWales says:

    Stay angry Lanny! :o)

  4. Sports-realist2 says:

Interview Jack Nicklaus and OFCOURSE your Gannon guy(which I personally don’t care for) had to talk about Eldrick’s round? Um, why? There’s nothing new to talk about…..So until Jack is dead, are they going to ask Jack why Eldrick keeps shooting’s 73’s and 75’s? To me, it shows a GREAT lack of originality in these announcers(ofcourse they all suck at interviewing)……You could almost have programmed robots doing these broadcasts….Just pull their string and they say 7 exciting phrases(toys from the 70’s)….

    • lannyh says:

Well, Gannon’s forte is play-by-play. They need to let Steve Sands and Todd Lewis do their excellent jobs of interviewing.

    • Jason says:

It would be so great if the next time someone ask Jack what he thinks of TW’s mediocre round he responds with “He shot 75 because he’s not a good golfer anymore. No, I don’t think he is the guy that will threaten my Majors record”.

If he did come out and say that, it would go along ways towards changing the narrative.

      • lannyh says:

If Jack did say that, we’d probably get a couple of years of the media writing, “Is that the incentive Tiger needs to catch Jack?”

  5. Sports-realist2 says:

Ok 10 minutes in and NOTHING but Eldrick sucking highlights/analysis and NOTHING……sorry couldn’t take it anymore….pathetic…..

    • lannyh says:

I cracked when they showed Woods way past Els at the 2000 U.S. Open. No mention whatsoever that Woods had the new Rock Ishii transformational ball while Ernie had the old technology.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

How many times has the golf channel done the 2000 US Open NOSTALGIA TOUR? They recently showed that event as a replay(not that I watched it), and they’ve prob gone back to the “HEY LETS LOOK AT THE 2000 SWING” about a thousand times(probably not much of an exaggeration either)…..Do they not realize in 2000 Eldrick was 24 years old? TWENTY FOUR….Let me say it again TWENTY FOUR years old!!!!!!!…….He is 5 months away from 40, but to the golf channel it will ALWAYS be ‘in the year 2000’ to quote the old Conan Obrien skits……

      • lannyh says:

It’s beyond ridiculous. And, like you said earlier, it will be all about “making the cut” tomorrow.

  6. Clueless says:

This is probably a dumbass question so my apologies but, what is the relationship between NBC, Golf Channel, Comcast?

    • lannyh says:

Golf Channel is part of the NBC family, and Comcast a year or two ago bought all the NBC properties.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

kyle porters articles are in essence about, eldrick, eldrick, eldrick, and tosses in a bruce jenner thing? hope porter gets castrated……he’s pathetic, along with all these NON sports writers…

      • lannyh says:

Have you listened to the recent podcast with Kyle and Shane Ryan? Kyle basically explains why he does that. He said something like, paraphrasing, “I can post anything at all with Tiger Woods’s name in it and people just go crazy.”

What he didn’t say was how he trolls with a sentence or two in almost every one of them. He’s strictly after clicks; he’s not covering golf. And he knows that. Shane Ryan also talked about how tenuous the job of sportswriter is these days. When you realize Porter does it for the clicks and paycheck, you can laugh at it. “Big Cat” is an inside joke. It’s not even THE Big Cat anymore; he does that because he knows people hate it. Now, I’m not defending him as a “journalist”; I’m just defending him as a guy who collects a paycheck. If Porter went all journalist on CBS, they’d fire him and hire another click generator.

Here’s what I don’t get, though… The golf media is full of Yay Tiger guys. Why are there no Boo Tiger guys?
Or maybe they don’t think they need to. Maybe they let the commenters do that for free.

      • Ken says:

Have to admit, Porter’s pathetic “click bait” worked on me for a while. Not as a Woods admirer, just in a “how can one writer be so pathetic” kind of way. Now I’ve gone to ignoring the CBS golf website – even laughably pathetic just gets old after a while. I used to have the CBS Sports icon on my Smartphone but I removed it. He’d better hope there’s not a lot of guys like me out there.

And while some of it may be calculated, I still think Porter would go down on Woods given half a chance.

      • lannyh says:

Based on what he’s written, Kyle’s dad used to take him to Augusta every year when he was growing up. He would have seen Woods pre-scandal and probably reported back proudly to all his friends how he saw the great Tiger Woods in person. Nothing wrong with that, but I think that’s probably the source of his support of Woods. I do think he realizes how ridiculous it is to continue to prop up Woods at this point. Not that that stops him.

I still go to CBS Golf, but not as much. I skip most of the Woods articles; I have no curiosity about them. Porter overplayed his hand. When I post comments there, it’s generally semi-trolling, anyway. And I’ve gotten to where I do that in the NFL “Daily Crime Report” section as much as in the golf section.

I went through something similar with political websites. For a number of years, I posted quite a bit on political websites, but it finally dawned on me how repetitive and predictable it all was. I think people come home from jobs they don’t find particularly fulfilling, and they take it out on the “republicons” and “libtards.” They blow off some steam and scapegoat “the other side,” and feel better about things.
