Sunday, Day Five: WGC Match Play

6:05 pm Update:

R O R Y!    R O R Y!    R O R Y!

4:25 pm Update:  Rory hitting Woodland with a birdie barrage.  Leads 4-up after seven holes.

3:05 pm Update:  Lanny H Golf is endorsing the following golfer in today’s afternoon finals:

  • Rory McIlroy

Anyone notice how, before Rory and Woodland could even reach the first green, NBC was discussing Tiger Woods and putting up Tiger Woods graphics?  There is something seriously rotten going on at NBC Golf.  (Payola?)  Comcast needs to clean house.  This has gone on far too long.

2:07 pm Update:

R O R Y !!!

10:15 am Update:  Lanny H Golf is endorsing the following golfers in today’s morning semi-finals:

  • Rory McIlroy
  • Danny Willett

Nothing against Woodland as a person or a golfer, but he’s the poster boy for the media’s “golf’s new athletes” meme because he played a year of college basketball.  (Hale Irwin, who was a two-time All Big Eight defensive back, might have thought he was an athlete.)  Also, you gotta love Willett’s accent!  My favorite since first hearing Charley Hull’s.

10:10 am Update:  I got involved writing the prior update, so am delayed a bit on the resumption of the Rory-Casey playoff.  Let’s hope Casey had food poisoning (of the not serious variety, of course) and not the flu; food poisoning goes away pretty quickly; the flu, as Henrik Stenson knows, can linger and linger.  (Surely it wasn’t Johnny Walker flu.  No way these guys would let the night get away from them in such a situation, is there?  I’m not accusing Casey, just saying one in a million is “still a chance.”)

I’m very glad to see Rory progress, make no mistake.  But it’s a little sad that Casey was sick.  Again, I was for Rory, and taking nothing away from Rory’s scrambling, but I felt Casey did outplay him yesterday.

9:35 am Update:  Stung by a yellow jacket?

Mr. Rymer responded (during the show!) which was pretty cool of him.

rymer2It was cool of him to respond, and I made my point, so I’m not going to get into a pissing match.  But I absolutely stand by my point: Golf Channel’s circle jerk over Tiger Woods this morning was tedious and insulting to golf fans.  And the segment was not an anomaly: unbridled praise of Tiger Woods is seemingly the prime directive in Golf Channel’s mission statement.  Rymer sits through the production meetings.  He knows the score.

9:20 am Update:  Tweet to Charlie Rymer of Golf Channel:

rymer9:00 am:  Did I hear that they are going to play No. 1 as the first hole today instead of the one that was next in line yesterday (which I believe someone here said was a par-3)?  If so, I don’t think that’s equitable, unless it was written in the rules that would be the procedure in the event of suspension of a playoff due to darkness.

Golf Channel has a Tiger vs Jack discussion going right now.  Golf Channel and NBC are just plain garbage.  Basically it is an excuse to show 20 Tiger Woods “fist pumps.”

Rory is going to resume a playoff in 30 minutes, and Golf Channel is showing fracking Tiger Woods bullshit.  There HAS to be some kind of seedy financial agreement with Nike or Steinberg.  Don’t they know how fracking tedious this is?

Charlie Rymer is just an ass….Should be working at Lowe’s wearing one of those yellow jackets….No offense to anyone working at Lowe’s…..

    • lannyh says:

I have nothing against Rymer personally — I can even find his persona/schtick amusing — but, holy crap, if Tiger Woods were playing Paul Casey in the continuation of a suspended playoff, would they have a ten-minute lead-in segment on whether Rory McIlroy or Jordan Spieth was the best match play player? It’s embarrassing for all the participants and Charlie was front and center.

      • Barry Burn says:

I pretty much agree with Sports-realist2 re Rymer. He is one of the types that forced me dump the GC for my mental health.

  2. Sports-realist2 says:

Can someone tell Furyk he sucks in match play…his ryder cup record is abysmal 9-17-4 record…..First time he’s reached semifinals in 15 years in this event….Rory’s like, hey Jim, you know you shouldn’t be here right?

    • Sports-realist2 says:

Jim and Phil are probably the two biggest reasons the Europeans have dominated the Ryder Cup in the recent history…

      • Sports-realist2 says:

        Phil 14-18-6 Ryder Cup record….

      • lannyh says:

Yet, Phil is calling the shots now…
Was it Trevino who pointed he Mickelson might want to play better and talk less?

      • Ken says:

Trevino comparing his era of winning vs. current RC play is a poor comparison . It was only Great Britain and Ireland for most of his era and not all of Europe like now. And Euro golf pre-Seve wasn’t very good. Nearly every American had a great RC record in those days. That didn’t mean they were all match play wizards, the competition wasn’t very good.

Mickelson is now 16-19-6 in RC. Good? No. But individual records don’t tell the whole story. In team play, you’re tied to a teammate, except for singles. When you’ve lost 8 of 10 matches, you’re going to have very few good individual records. Almost no American has a good record. Being near .500 isn’t that bad relative to all other American players.

Blaming Phil reminds me of pissed off Penguin fans blaming Crosby and Malkin for the team’s failure in the playoffs. They want to get rid of everyone. You don’t fix a problem by dumping your best players.

Furyk’s record is truly bad. He had a good week though.

  3. Sports-realist2 says:

furyk is playing out of his mind, and yet only tied with Rory, who is playing so, so by his standards…

    • lannyh says:

It is fairly frustrating to watch Rory’s short approach shots.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

I mean he has to know that is his weakness, but this has been going on for months now…His swing coach bears some scrutiny here…I could hit many of the shots Rory has hit from the 150 yard and in range…..

  4. Sports-realist2 says:

Rory should be embarrassed if he loses here…I mean amateur 2nd shots for MONTHS? when that is your job and you can’t hit a 100 yard chip, you might want to do the Eldrick, and take some time off or something….

    • Sports-realist2 says:

Rory just has lost his draw swing…It’s been obvious for months….Now it doesn’t mean he stinks, it just mean he is guessing….

  5. Sports-realist2 says:

So Mcllory is 7 under in 16 through 18 in the last two rounds? That’s impressive…Again with Mcllroy’s C game in his short game too…

  6. Sports-realist2 says:

Rory should be 2 or 3 up…Rory KEEPS playing for his draw, and it seem to KEEP staying out to the right…..I haven’t seen him duck hook one, so not sure why he doesn’t just straighten out his alignment some…..In just the few rounds I’ve seen him play, he’s left about 40% of his shots out to the right, maybe more…..Hardly ANY that’s gotten lost left of the green……

  7. Sports-realist2 says:

So how many other golfers do we get to hear about ‘private’ lives of golfers, besides Eldrick…Now the golf channel will have a DATING discussion for an hour on morning drive, followed by hours of over analysis on what this means to US, to the WORLD, and to the UNIVERSE….

    • lannyh says:

“We interrupt this World Golf Championship final to bring you the sad news that Tiger Woods and his girlfriend aren’t getting along.”

    • lannyh says:

If you want the latest details, be sure to read Kyle Porter at CBS.

      • Sports-realist2 says:

This just in: Charlie Rymer has announced his intention to get a sex change in the hopes of landing Eldrick as his future mate……Then Cadillac would show Rymer jumping in the air in slow motion, or something…

      • lannyh says:

Haha, playing with dolls and sewing, lying in matching bathtubs, staring into the sunset.

      • JB says:

What I thought was curious is that the separate statements form both Woods and Vonn that Sands read, mirrored each other almost to the word.

      • lannyh says:

Yeah, they were choreographed. Same thing with Finchem and Steinberg regarding Olsen. I bet Vonn got a Uchitel-type payoff to “keep it down home” regarding the trips to her “special trainer” in Austria.

  8. Sports-realist2 says:

And notice how Porter and friends on CBS put the so called ‘break up’ ABOVE the #1 player in the world Rory playing against Woodland for the WGC championship…………??????? Lol…actually, just thought about all those great FAKE facebook comments that will show up on that article(this might be the top 3): 1. Get someone soon, we’re rootin for ya…….2. Hope you find another blonde chick……..3. Please start fornicating with another bimbo soon Eldrick…….

    • lannyh says:

I made my comment about Porter tongue-in-cheek, but went to look as soon as I wrote it. Sure enough, he had an article up already. I read a handful of comments, but that horse died a long time ago and still they still beat it. It’s truly a Kardashian/Bieber crowd now that follows Woods. He’s doing anything to get attention. His “schedule announcement” last week, now this “breakup announcement.” Both timed to detract from the Match Play (and New Orleans).

      • Sports-realist2 says:

Yeah I agree…..all these ‘hey look at us’ statements are in no way unintentional……..Porter is a clown and I don’t really bother to read his articles or comments much anymore…Rigged commentary and coverage ABOUND in broadcasting these days….Rory will win this week, could win next week, then what will the media talk about….Oh wait, don’t tell me….

  9. Sports-realist2 says:

Yeah JB, Eldric’s image is SOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO rigged by his agent/Nike…..I know when all of us broke/break up we ALWAYS issue separate STATEMENTS to the press…..smh…….

  10. Sports-realist2 says:

Rory’s ‘going for it on every shot’ is rather strange to watch…On the 13th, when Woodland was in trouble, he went for the HOLE, instead of just anywhere on the green??? Did he suddenly read Phil Mickelson’s ‘how to play match play’ books?

  11. Speedy says:

Hard to believe Woodland got that far with that game. Rors’ C-game beat him handily.
No matter, Golfdom is mourning the split of its King & Queen.
