Ladies and Gentlemen, there’s a new needle mover in town. His name is Jordan “Wyatt Earp” Spieth.
Jordan Spieth is one of the top news stories at Google at the time of the NBA playoffs and the NFL draft (and the NHL playoffs). And I’m not talking one of top ten sports stories, but top ten NEWS stories, including all news of all types. And Jordan is one of them!
Last week, his name never appeared. It was just “Masters Tournament.” Now, Young Jordan is getting top billing. Over the NFL draft and NBA playoffs.
What’s that about golf dying? Can someone please remind me?
If golf ratings beat out NBA playoffs this weekend, half the golf media will be scrambling to find something new to whine about!
Addendum: What’s beautiful is how Jordan’s fame has grown organically. He didn’t have to have a “Hello, World” dog and pony show. He didn’t have a giant hologram. (In fairness to Rory, he was already famous when Nike made him do that.) No, Jordan did it the old-fashioned way: he earned it.
The golf media wasn’t pushing him from day one. In fact, their coverage was so rotten, I questioned if they were boycotting Young Jordan! (Who knows? Under Armour probably represents an insurgent to the Golf Channel-Nike Industrial Complex.)
