WGC Trump Doral Cadillac: Saturday, Day Three, Semi-Live Blog, Rory, Euro Six

Final Wrap

I think it’s on.  I haven’t seen the official pairings, but it looks like Sneds vs Warren is on!

I’m kind of for J.B. at this point.  After his first approach shot yesterday, which was perfect and wound up going into the water due to the tricked-up golf course, I feel he has it coming to him.  Which brings me to…

This golf course, if you ask me, shows the damage the uncontrolled equipment manufacturers have done.  The course is obsolete.  The top three guys are the long hitters who kept it out of the water the most.  Roll back the equipment and stop shaving the areas around the greens.  The runoffs into the water are idiotic.  I guess this is what you get when you want to collect green fees from the general public the other 51 weeks of the year.  They have to be easy for the public, then turned into goofy golf to keep pros from shooting 25 under.

5:00 pm Update

Warren-Sneds showdown looking very likely tomorrow.  It’s going to be crazy if they are paired together.  If Ryan Palmer makes it to the clubhouse without a blowup, it should be on!

2:10 pm Update

Golf Digest’s In the Tank For Tiger Award-Winning Article.  This is bizarre in its inanity.  (Note that they point out Paddy Power has Woods at 16-1 to beat Jack’s record, but somehow neglect to mention they have Rory at 4-1.)

Rory is playing solid golf.  Irons not bad.  One superb approach.  No-drama pars for the most part.  Euro Six player Marc Warren is -4.

Rory with another birdie.  -2 on the day.  Five off the pace of the leaders.  Rickie eagles from the fairway, now four off the pace.  DJ eagles from the tee box, now four off pace.

1:15 pm Update

Rory birdies his third, goes -1 on the day.  Euro Six member Marc Warren is -3 on the day — with a double bogey on his card.

11:35 am Update

Rory tees off in one hour.  One of my “inferior” Euro Six boys is -3 after four holes.  Looks like we’re headed for one heckuva day of golf action.

9:45 am Update

Four of the Euro Six are on the course, and none is shooting worse than one-over.  Snedeker will be hard-pressed to keep up with the Euro Six now that they have played the course a couple of times.

8:20 am:  Euro Six off to blazing start

Stephen Gallacher and Anirban Lahiri both birdied No. 1.  Snedeker will be under the gun from the time he strikes his first tee shot.

The golf channel is FASCINATED by Rory throwing his club…..They’ve mentioned it about 10 times in the first hour of coverage…..Kyle Porter has written about 3 articles about it already….

I like Rory. But lets be fair, he was totally out of order.

I know you started it because of an article you read, but quit using Brandt Snedeker as a punching bag. He was in a slump due to injury and swing changes, but he’s coming back and is currently -3 on his round and even for the tournament. Marc Warren is the only member of the ‘Euro 6’ who hasn’t withdrawn or embarrassed himself. Snedeker has 7 PGA Tour wins, has contended in multiple majors, was as high as 4th in the OWGR, and he’s highly marketable because of how likable and smart he is. There is no denying he is a higher caliber player than your ‘Euro 6’. It would make more sense to compare those guys to Robert Streb.

It’s unfair to use Sneds, but that’s the hand I was dealt. The point was that it was supposed to be laughably far-fetched to even mention those guys in the same sentence with Snedeker. This is a joke of a course that Snedeker has played many more times. Lahiri is played his first EVER tourney in the U.S., fresh from India which has a ten-hour time differential. Gallacher finished T-6 here last year, so it’s not like he can’t play. These guys will be here quite a bit in the next month or two, with the Masters and Match Play.

Sneds better lace his shoes up tight, because the Euro Six is coming after him!

That’s why I keep coming back, because you always respond to me even if I’m rude to you. Even when I disagree with what you say, I enjoy reading. I believe that international players deserve a fair shake, and some internationals can break through and are worthy of being in WGCs and majors. However, I’ve followed all of the Euro Six guys careers. These guys have had their opportunities to break into the mainstream (all have been pro 7+ years) and they just aren’t good enough. It’s unfair to judge anyone because of one week on some tricked up Trump abomination, but I’m basing that opinion on more than just this week.

Let add this: I will give Snedeker more coverage in the next couple of months than the entire mainstream golf media combined.

  4. Sports-realist says:

Boy if Rory could do another 2 under round today, he has a real shot at winning this..

  5. BigTimeTimmyJim says:

Stat of the day! Every player in the field has been in at least 2 fairway bunkers AND 5 greenside bunkers.

  6. BigTimeTimmyJim says:

    4:45pm Update! Rory’s 3-iron recovered!

  7. Sports-realist says:

anyone tired of those cadillac commercials yet…..

The course is great. The top 5 in world all in top 12. Similar to a major setup, it separates the men from the boys.
