Debate with Michael Fitzpatrick at Bleacher Report

I very much took exception with Michael Fitzpatrick’s most recent column at Bleacher Report (“What Professional Golf Will Look Like After Tiger Woods”), and I let him know in the comments section.  He has defended his column there, for which I give him high praise.  I still disagree with almost every word he wrote, but at least he is willing to discuss the matter.  Not to mention allowing my comments to stand.

Interesting debate….I’m sure he’s trying to find those ‘magical’ numbers, as we speak….He’s trying to have his cake and eat it too, as so many of these PRO-Tiger articles do…….Also, it’s not a secret that black audiences tend to watch black shows/movies/sports ect..aka BET…I saw an article that stated 50% of the NBA ratings are due to blacks, even though they are only 12% of the population…It’s not a stretch to think that a large portion of those PRO-Woods ratings are due to blacks….The economy of the world is basically falling apart too, and the 90’s aren’t coming back..

People hear things over and over and over again, so they think they must be true or else they wouldn’t be repeated like that. If a golf writer wrote “Des Moines has a population greater than Tokyo, which makes Tiger’s achievement even greater,” every golf writer in the world would repeat it as fact. And their readers would belittle anyone who disputed the population claims. They have this myth in their heads — writers and Tiger fans both — and they refuse to let anything interfere with it. But, that said, Fitzpatrick was willing to have a back-and-forth with me. Most places just delete opposing opinions. 🙂
I bet he will mull over what I wrote. He may dismiss it now, but I planted the seed, and maybe in a couple of years he’ll think, Well, ole Lanny had a point.

Respect to both of you for keeping it civil. It was evident that Mr. Fitzpatrick has drunk the Tiger Kool-Aid. It was also evident that you have much more time to look over these numbers than he has. I guarantee you there are published scientific journal articles supported by less research than you have done on this topic. Even if you didn’t sway the author, maybe you swayed a few people who read the comments.

Thanks. As I was typing a response to your comment, it became so long that I decided to make it a regular blog entry. It’s sort of a reflection on the coverage of the Tiger Woods Era and the dotcom bubble.
