Wrapup: Dubai, Day Three Live Blog

Rory semi-struggled coming in, but never bogied and picked up one more birdie on No. 17.  Great par save by Warren on No. 17, too.  Kind of a funny one.  Rory leads by four heading into Sunday.

6:40 am

Rory lost his momentum, but not his lead.  He missed a near tap-in for birdie and made pars on two par-5 holes that he should have birdied.  His drives are not finding fairways right now.  Five holes to go.

5:10 am

This is what Rory’s round yesterday might have been.  The putts are falling today today.  5 birdies in first 8 holes.  Has five shot lead on the field.  Still a long, long way to go.  Rory hits a great drive, and the Brit announcer says, quietly, unobtrusively, “That’s only just perfect.”  Our American announcers would have felt the need to add 1000 useless words.

4:30 am

The top five players on the leaderboard are from the UK.  Two Irishmen, followed by three Englishmen.  McIlroy, McDowell, Seve Benson (named after Ballesteros), Lee Westwood, and Andy Sullivan.  Rory picked up another birdie, even after a stray drive.  Hits another stray drive to start his sixth hole.

4:00 am

I got up an hour too early.  I blame Golf Channel, but it’s possible the fault is mine.  Rory is three holes into his round.  I don’t mind missing a couple of holes, but if this isn’t live, I’m going to be ticked off.   Let’s see…  Okay, it’s live, whew!

I take a lot of shots at Golf Channel, and they deserve it, but I have to give them credit for providing live golf tournaments.  I don’t mind getting up in the middle of the night for live golf, but I wouldn’t lose one minute of sleep for tape delay.  So, hats off to Golf Channel!

Rory has two birdies in his first four holes and leads by two.  Just made a par-saving putt on No. 4.  Danny Willet is a player to keep an eye on because he sits just a few slots below Tiger Woods on the OWGR list.  Woods is probably about to drop out of the world top fifty, which means he won’t qualify for the WGC Cadillac tournment in Florida in March.  I’ll write more on that topic in the next day or two, but for now just know Willet, who sits T-9, will probably vault Woods come Monday.
