Rory McIlory and Rickie Fowler did exactly what they were supposed to do and Martin Kaymer did them three better. McIlroy and Fowler went out in the morning draw and both shot -5 and wound up T-8. Among the others at -5 was American Peter Uihlein. Alexander Levy, the 24-year-old Frenchman who has climbed from OWGR #110 to #52, is sitting at -6 and T-3.
Speaking of Frenchmen, I failed to mention yesterday that Victor Dubuisson is in the field; he shot a respectable -3 and sits at T-25. Another young Frenchman, Gary Stal, sits at T-12. Stal is 22, Levy and Dubuisson are 24. It might not be much longer until there are more Frenchmen in the OWGR top ten than Americans!
Martin Kaymer’s -8 in the afternoon session propelled him to the top of the leaderboard. Thomas Pieters sits one back in solo 2nd.
17-year-old Dominic Foos shot -1 and sits at T-59 along with 20-year-old Matthew Fitzpatrick.
If the competition continues on this trajectory, this tournament will be in contention for Tournament of the Year. I can’t wait for round 2. (I woke up to watch the last hour-and-a-half of Rory’s round in the middle of the night, then slept until the last hour-and-a-half of the afternoon session. My only complaint about this event is the time zone! But, that’s a small concession to make for such stellar golf.)
