Patrick Reed vs Tiger Woods, Friday, June 27, 2014

Today promises to be a very interesting day to monitor the golf media.  Patrick Reed, sitting at -3, and Tiger Woods, sitting at +3 will both tee off at precisely the same time today, 1:12 pm.  Will the media show Reed appropriately, or will they show Woods almost exclusively?

Reed is contending for the lead, and Woods is sitting outside the cut line.  Reed has gained 140.37 OWGR points this year.  Woods has gained 5.07 OWGR points this year.  Reed has two wins this year, Woods has none.  Reed is 23 years old and rocketing up the OWGR standings; Woods is 38 years old and falling apart.

Hey, Callaway, maybe it’s time to play hardball.  If Golf Channel shows Woods all day instead of Reed, they are screwing you out of airtime.  Reed’s Callaway cap won’t be seen near as often as Woods’s Nike cap.  You might want to reconsider where you advertise.

Golf Channel may claim that Woods brings more viewers, so that’s good for you, but let’s be honest here: those additional viewers are casual golf fans who aren’t going to buy your clubs anyway.  Better to have the core golf fans see your logo a lot rather than have non-golfers seeing Nike’s logo a lot, don’t you think?

  1. Nate says:

For laughs, watched the first few minutes of the repeat of the 2nd round coverage, and NBC has officially gone into ‘WORSHIP like a diety’ mode, about one person hitting a white ball around……The intro felt like you have just been raped by Eldrick…..yuck…The coverage was EXACTLY what I expected….Home video coverage of one person, while they were almost FORCED to show someone else hitting an actual golf shot, instead of watching there special someone just STAND there……..In all seriousness, it was a very uncomfortable intro…..But I will probably be watching less and less golf, as these networks are unable to do fair coverage anymore….And don’t even bother with the golf channel….
