There were some interesting questions and answers during Rory McIlroy’s pre-Memorial press conference today. All the quotes in this piece are paraphrases.
Stephanie Wei asked a cringe-worthy question, but give her credit for asking what she wanted to ask, protocol be damned. The question was hardly the stuff of Woodward and Bernstein, but she had the spine to ask it, and, if the question had to be asked, better a woman asked it. The question: “The New York Times said you broke up with Wozniacki in a three minute phone call. Is that true? Do you have a comment?” Rory hesitated for a moment, then softly and politely said, “I’m here to talk about my golf.”
During one answer, Rory said he considered himself mature for a 25-year-old, then added, “You’d probably agree, if a couple of my friends were up here with me.”
During another answer, Rory said that events such as the separation from his management team and the equipment change were learning experiences. He said, as part of his answer, a moment later, “You learn from your mistakes, and hope to do better the next time.” Was that an admission he considers the Nike deal a mistake? The management team he fired was the one that did the Nike deal, so maybe we already know that answer.
