Make Me Pay: A second player, Roberto Castro, has been added to Make Me Pay this week. If either Jordan Spieth or Castro wins at Colonial, Lanny H Golf will make a donation to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital.
Classic Golf Journalism: I’m not sure what is going on at Stephanie Wei’swebsite, but she now seems to be posting articles by other writers in addition to her own. At any rate, I saw a recent tweet of hers and discovered a fantastic story by Shane Ryan about Brendon Todd’s win at the Byron Nelson last Sunday. Wei described it as “It’s like you’re there.” It’s the kind of long-form sports reporting that made Sports Illustrated mandatory reading the 60’s and 70’s. It was nice to read a golf article and not wonder if a junior high student wrote it.
I have one good-natured disagreement, though. Ryan writes, “There’s no good way to integrate a golf course and a city,” when discussing No. 14 at Las Colinas. I would suggest that No. 8 at that very same course is a perfect integration of golf course and city The relentless highway traffic immediately by and below the tee box is so “right.” I once heard a passing motorist shout, “Fore!” — something every muni player hears with regularity. Not once have I thought golf was cheapened by the rumbling vehicles there. In fact, I like the pros facing the most-feared shot in golf: a drive with a heavily-trafficked road on the right, where a slice might cost you two strokes — and the price of a windshield.
P.S. Stephanie, please, please take that useless crap off the top of your homepage. I have to scroll two complete pages before I see any content whatsoever.
Continuing Decline of PGATour.com: The website has become so bad I skip articles Google finds there. I use only the leaderboard, and now the leader’s scorecard/stat info is automatically opened every time you pull up the leaderboard. You have to close that before you actually see an actual leaderboard. Total incompetence. Whatever the unemployment rate is in the U.S., it’s not high enough. We’ve got far too many guys and gals collecting paychecks for making things worse.
BMW PGA Championship at Wentworth, England: Golf Channel is providing a ton of live coverage of the European Tour event this week. It’s quite a strong event, with most of the top European players in attendance. Rory McIlroy tees off at 8 am EDT.
