Rory McIlroy, a Nike man through and through, quit mid-round today in the Honda Classic. Was he imitating his “good friend” and Nike stablemate Tiger Woods? I wonder if Rory got the blimp coverage as he left the course. I hope he has mastered “the limp.”
Nike (NKE) stock is level for the day. We’ll watch to see if Rory’s abandonment of play will have any impact on the price. Will heads roll in the Nike golf division?
New ad campaign: “Nike golf clubs: we can destroy your game in just two months!”
There was a time in the not-so-distant past that you were referring to this guy as Sir Galahad. You were breathless as you fawned all over him and his tennis-playing girlfriend. Now look at you.
Pathetic.
He’s still one of my two favorite players. I love the kid. I hope he gets his game back. But I cautioned him about switching equipment as soon as I heard rumors of a possible move. The articles are in my archives for anyone who wants to read them. Please realize I’m not Rory’s PR flack. (That would be the Einstein who came up with the wisdom tooth brilliancy.) I’ve had to write a couple of critical articles about Rory in the past, articles which addressed his character, not his play, and those to me were much more damning. (I’m thinking of a the time I heard him curse on the course.) In this case, my criticism is really of Nike ruining Rory’s game and, now, Rory’s decision to walk off the course.
Wow – Thank goodness Tiger Woods didn’t pull this crap – you would have pulled a muscle running to the keyboard repeatedly to blast the guy. They’re human after all.
